Where you been? The Best Town in America
Cheers RVA!
Today will be mostly sunny, hot, with a high of 94. Tomorrow will actually be hotter if that helps. Stay hydrated.
the pulp:
A new Amazon returns reseller is opening in Henrico near Regency, Josh Jacobs from Bizsense reports. ‘Where Ya Bin’, a large store full of 100+ bins of Amazon returns lists all items at $14 on Friday, and then gradually drops the price to 25 cents by the next Thursday, with new inventory arriving weekly.
Two pedestrians were hit by a driver in Richmond’s Carver neighborhood, from channel 8. One person was taken to the hospital wit non-life-threatening injuries. The victims were standing by the driver’s side of the car in the parking lane on West Leigh St.
Richmond made CNN Travel’s Best Towns in America to Visit 2024. Arts, culture, history, and a great food and beverage scene contributed to the top ranking. Read the article here.
the juice:
Elizabeth Holmes from channel 6 reported on how Richmond’s hottest neighborhoods are cooling off. She quotes UR Proffessor Todd Lookingbill, who studies the effects of urban heat islands.
Lookingbill noted that the coolest parts of Richmond can be 16 degrees cooler than the warmest parts. Much of this difference is due to the combination of large areas of dark asphalt and limited tree cover and green spaces.
About 100 miles of sidewalks in the city were identified that could be narrowed to allow more trees and still be ADA compliant, meaning physically accessible to people with disabilities.
However tree cover as a solution to urban heat takes time, as Lookingbill notes:
“Where we have the oaks and trees planted, they'll take 10 to 30 years in order to really return those shading, cooling effects that result in those cooler temperatures that you look for."
The city does provide walk-in cooling stations at the Department of Social Services locations and Public Libraries, as well as an Inclement Weather Shelter on Chamberlayne Ave when temperatures are above 92.
the vibe:
