Unionized Labor, a Tax Battle, and Instagram-worthy Spots in the City

Three students have been charged in Chesterfield in connection to the stabbing that occurred at Meadowbrook High School on Tuesday. A 14-yr old has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a weapon on school property. Two other students suspected of helping to conceal the weapon have been charged. The victim sustained serious injuries but is in stable condition. The attack occurred during a fight at the school.
Jeff Shapiro from the RTD dives into the dockworkers strike and reactions from politicians across the spectrum. He notes while unionized laborers are a very small portion of the labor force in Virginia, they have increased from 3.7% to 4.3%
Maybe it's because Virginia was founded by the British crown as a business enterprise more than 400 years ago. Maybe it's because Virginia government — traditionally and historically — has, in effect, been an arm of business. Maybe it's because a plantation class reliant on literally captive labor reinvented itself time and again to preserve its control of Virginia's economy and politics.

Jonathon Spiers from Bizsense covers a potential legal battle brewing between VCU Health and the City of Richmond over tax payments on the failed downtown development project.
The health system pulled out of the ill-fated project in late 2022 but has remained on the hook for the annual payments, which were worked into an agreement with the city and CCP to keep the property tax-generating for the city. Three of those payments have been made so far, totaling about $2 million.
The annual payments were worked into the original agreement as a way to ensure real estate tax revenue was generated from the property.
