Traffic Calming, the Shockoe Project, and Community Gardens
Cheers RVA!
Today will be cooler and less humid with sunshine and a high of 65, with a low of 41 in the evening.
the juice:
A temporary traffic calming measure is nearly complete at the intersection of Laburnum Avenue and Heritage Road adjacent to Linwood Holton Elementary School.
The project is part of the city’s Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper initiative (LQC) that provides “community empowerment with real-time feedback and evaluation” before long-term installations are made.

The extended curbs reduce the distance pedestrians need to travel to cross the roadway, force vehicles to slow down when making a turn, and increase visibility.
Other LQC projects underway include traffic calming near MLK Jr. Middle School along Mosby Street and near the Richmond High School for the Arts along Midlothian Turnpike.
the pulp:
A man has died and a woman was injured in a double shooting that occurred Monday evening on Northside near the intersection of Azalea Avenue and Chamberlayne road, via WTVR.
City Council is expected to vote this evening on a conceptual plan for the Shockoe Project, an “experiential destination that places Richmond at the center of the American story by recognizing the history of enslaved and free Africans and people of African descent.” A proposed plan for a pavilion at the site of Lumpkin’s Slave Jail will also be considered at the meeting.

A recent :rva reddit post has compiled a number of generous discounts for teachers across a variety of goods and services.
the dive:
Curious about community gardens in your neighborhood?
RICtoday has created a list of communal growing spaces across the city.
Richmond Grows Gardens, a Parks and Recreation program, provides “city-owned parcels for community-led agriculture and horticulture projects as well as programming support in order to cultivate green spaces for growing food, community, and environmental resilience.”
