Strategic Working Groups, Good Trouble, and More Tiny Porch Concerts

Cheers RVA!

Today will be partly cloudy with a high of 89 and a low of 73, with, again, a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. The weekend is expected to be mostly clear with highs around 90.

the juice:

An estimated 1k protesters lined a nearly 3-mile stretch of Monument Avenue on Thursday afternoon as part of a “Good Trouble” protest on the 5th anniversary of the death of civil rights leader John Lewis.

Protesters lined the median on Monument Avenue stretching from Willow Lawn to Meadow Avenue, many in opposition to the Trump administration but also advocating for a number of causes.

The protest was organized by the 50501 Virginia Chapter.

the pulp:

  • The City Planning Commission approved two housing developments, one 17-unit apartment building on Jahnke Road across from Chippenham hospital, and a four-townhome infill project behind two houses on Hanover Avenue, via Bizsense. The previous plan for the project at 3801-03 Hanover had included eight new townhomes. The decision is an example of the balance the city must find with increasing urban density and providing more housing while maintaining the character of the neighborhood.

  • The City of Richmond has created two strategic working groups to “strengthen the resiliency of the region’s water system”, via a press release. The first group will consist solely of officials from Richmond and focus on scenario planning. The second group will consist of officials from the city, Henrico, Chesterfield, and Hanover counties and will focus on operational planning and coordination.

  • A mural painting community block party will take place on Saturday from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at the corner of Mosby and P Streets, the second of three street art mural projects on Mosby Street as part of the ‘Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper” campaign to increase pedestrian safety while longer term solutions are developed and implemented.

  • The Woodland Heights Tiny Porch Concert Series continues on Sunday beginning at 5:00 pm, via RVAHub.
