The Department of Public Works will install raised crosswalks, also known as speed tables, at five intersections along Midlothian Turnpike in South Richmond in a corridor identified as part of the High Injury Network.
The crosswalks are expected to be installed this fall at the intersection of Midlothian and 28th, 30th, 31st, 33rd, and 36th Streets.
According to research at Iowa State University, speed tables allow vehicles to travel faster than speed humps, but still produce a 28% reduction of speed in the 85th percentile, and reduce collisions by 28%.
There have been 1142 crashes so far this year in the City of Richmond, resulting in 550 injuries and 6 deaths.
the pulp:
Students at the VCUArts campus in Qatar were issued a shelter in place advisory after an airstrike by Israeli forces, via WRIC. While the strikes were not in close proximity to the campus, classes were cancelled for the rest of the day. The campus in Doha, Qatar was founded in 1998 and hosts about 300 students.
Chesterfield County school buses will soon be getting stop arm cameras, from WWBT. The county says cameras will capture any vehicles that pass while the bus is stopped and officials will review violations before issuing notices. A grace period will last until October 14, with warnings issued to violators. After that drivers who fail to stop will receive a $250 penalty.
RICToday has compiled a list of the “unwritten rules of Richmond”.

Tom Lappas from the Citizen dives into the Virginia Racing Commission’s upcoming meeting regarding Roseshire Gaming Parlor’s application to obtain a license to operate its historical horse racing machines (essentially slot machines) at its new Staples Mill location in Henrico.
Construction at the location at 4016 Glenside Drive is near completion and nearly 100 workers have already been hired.
Lappas writes:
But the five-member commission could stymie those plans if at least three members vote to deny the facility a license, as a number of elected Henrico County officials hope they will. State Senator Schuyler VanValkenburg and Brookland District Supervisor Dan Schmitt (both of whom oppose the facility’s intended location) sent a joint email this week to citizens urging them to appear at the meeting and address the commission.
