the dive:
Homeward, a planning and coordinating organization for homeless services in the greater Richmond region, reported 585 people experiencing homelessness in the area.
The point in time count reflects both those staying in shelters as well as outdoors.
The number of those experiencing unsheltered homelessness has increased since pre-pandemic levels.
Homeward was founded in 1998, and did its first point in time count in 1999. Semi-annual counts began in 2007, and in 2015 the organization claims to have “functionally ended veteran homelessness.”
The service area extends outside Richmond proper, from Goochland and Powhatan to New Kent and Charles City, as well as from Hanover to Chesterfield.
The most common factors contributing to homelessness in the area are a breakdown in relationships, and economic hardship including losing a job or cost of housing.
