Governor Youngkin has said Virginia will not follow California’s clean car standards anymore, from the Virginia Mercury.
The law was passed in 2021 when Democrats had full control of the house and Senate.
While the law has not been repealed, Attorney General Jason Miyares provided legal cover for the move in a 9-page advisory opinion.
The legal justification for Wednesday’s announcement, laid out in a 9-page advisory opinion by Miyares, is that the first version of California’s standards expire at the end of the year. Though they’re being replaced with a new set of rules, Miyares opined that Virginia law doesn’t strictly require Virginia’s State Air Pollution Control Board to go along with the updated California standards.
Miyares is widely considered a possible GOP candidate for governor in 2025.
The California Standards required 100% of cars sold to be EV by 2035. The new standards set forth a less aggressive timeline, with 56% of cars sold being EV by 2032. Currently 9% of car sales in Virginia are for electric vehicles.
One issue with electric vehicles regarding emissions is the source of the energy generation. Here is a chart of Virginia’s electricity sources:

Debate continues over new Chesterfield school name, from 12 on your side. All three proposed names contained the word Otterdale, which was a farm in Chesterfield that used enslaved labor. The school board decided to not vote on the name and will bring in a third party to examine the issue.

Check out local artists on social media for clues about where to look. Here is a map of the local shrooms found so far:

VPM reports on Henrico’s Arrive Alive campaign to improve road safety. Previously I had written the deadline to complete the survey was June 1, but it is actually July 1, so there is still time. You can pin a safety concern and add a comment in less than a minute.
Chesterfield has also recently launched a public survey regarding a four-mile stretch of Midlothian Turnpike(route 60), from the city/county line to near the Johnston-Willis Hospital.
The stretch doesn’t offer much in terms of pedestrian and cyclist safety, and the county is looking for community input. Fill out the very short survey here.
