RVA Bike Share, Southside Development, and Flights to Europe?

Today will be mostly sunny, with a high of 95 and a low of 74. A heat advisory remains in effect until 8:00 pm. The next few days are likely to be very hot, with temperatures expected to drop by the end of the week.

Over 90k central Virginians lost power on Sunday, with nearly half of those customers having power restored by Sunday evening.

After a brief assessment, Dominion Energy focuses first on restoring power to facilities providing essential services, such as police and fire stations, hospitals, and water treatment plants.

  • The bikes used for the ‘RVA Bike Share’ program are coming to the end of their life cycle and will soon need to be replaced, via WWBT. The city is considering expanding the program from 100 to 300 bikes, which cost around $2k each. Currently the city brings in about $170k in revenue through contracts with scooter companies, and spends about $200k on the bike share program.

  • The RIC Chief Growth Officer Martin Rubenstein said international flights to Europe was one of a number of ideas considered when evaluating future plans for the airport, via the Citizen. Rubenstein said the constraint of RIC for international flights is not the runway or the type of planes that make transatlantic flights, but the terminal.

  • Redditor dub_t shared an original video with a rap reference to the unofficial mascot of Richmond: “My city’s mascot start with silent O”.

A local developer is eyeing a major development of a former industrial area in South Richmond off Commerce Road, according to Sarah Vogelsong at the Richmonder.

Harper Associates is looking to rezone 47 acres of land it owns on Ingram Avenue for a project of similar magnitude to the Libby Hill development in Henrico County.

Vogelsong noted how the zoning classification compares to other developments in the city:

The rezoning of the Harper properties, which cleared the Planning Commission July 15 and is expected to come before City Council on Monday, would change the classification of the parcels from light industrial to transit-oriented nodal (TOD-1) and central business (B-5), two districts that allow high density and mixed uses. Some of Richmond’s densest areas, including much of Scott’s Addition and Manchester, have TOD-1 zoning.
