Rosie's Tax Revenue, Mayoral TV Ad Spending, and Aurora
Cheers RVA!
Today we’ll have more sunshine, with a high of 70 and a low of 47 in the evening. The weekend looks sunny as well, with temperatures increasing to a high of 80.
the pulp:
Danna Avula’s campaign spending on TV ads has dwarfed the other candidates, with Avula having spent $350k on 1300 spots across four stations, via the RTD. Roday has spent $50k on 237 spots and Mosby $20k on 62 spots. Neither of the other candidates has purchased TV advertising. All of the candidates have chosen Jeopardy! as a time slot for reaching potential voters.
RVA Music Fest, which features music from local independent artists, will take place at Dogwood Dell from noon - 8 pm on Saturday. A pitch competition will take place to open the festival, where entrepreneurs can pitch their ideas to win $500 in a “shark tank” style event. Admission is free for the family-friendly festival and guests are encouraged to bring school supplies to support Richmond Public Schools.
the dive:
Graham Moomaw from the Richmonder dives into the 50/50 split of Rosie’s tax revenue between the City of Richmond and New Kent.
The Richmond location of Rosie’s is the most profitable of the six locations, and generated $3.7 million for Richmond and $3.7 million for New Kent in the last fiscal year.
In total since opening in 2020, the “slot machines” in Richmond have generated $29 million in tax revenue, with half of that money going to New Kent.
Moomaw writes:
According to a state analysis presented to General Assembly members, New Kent is making more money from Richmond’s HHR machines than it makes from the machines at its own race track. In fiscal year 2024, New Kent took in $3.1M from machines at the track, less than the $3.7M it got from the Richmond machines.
