the dive:
Graham Moomaw from the Richmonder dives into a recent proposal to reduce the property tax by 4 cents, from $1.20 of every $100 assessed to $1.16.
The proposal is estimated to save the average homeowner $150 on their tax bill, and would cost the city $16 million in foregone tax revenue.
City council’s representative from the 8th District City, Reva Trammel, proposed the ordinance. Trammel is currently running for re-election.
Council President Kristin Nye offered a competing ordinance to keep the rate unchanged.
Moomaw noted assessments this year increased an average of 6.8%, slightly less than in years prior.
While the city and surrounding counties offer different services, Henrico’s rate is significantly lower at $0.85, with Chesterfield’s rate at $0.90, as compared to Richmond’s $1.20 tax per $100 of value.
City council is expected to hold public meetings in the coming weeks, with the proposals first going to the Finance and Economic Development Standing Committee, which will meet next Thursday.
