Cheers RVA!

Today will be mostly sunny with a high of 76 and a low of 52.

the juice:

The City of Richmond has released an initial assessment document entitled “Resilient Richmond” regarding the Federal Government shutdown.

Mayor Avula noted a substantial number of Richmonders depend on Federal programs and assured the city he has the experience to navigate the challenges ahead.

The assessment revealed:

  • More than 54,000 residents rely on SNAP benefits for food assistance

  • Over 3,000 families dependent on TANF for basic needs

  • Nearly $90 million in food and basic needs spending across our local economy-almost all of it from federal funding

  • $3.9 million in federal fuel assistance that helped residents through last year's heating season

Avula said:

While this moment brings uncertainty, it isn't uncharted territory. We've navigated this before-and we will again. My commitment is to stay as transparent as possible and to keep residents informed as we learn more.

the pulp:

  • A Hanover man pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Monday in connection to a fight that occurred last year in Scott’s Addition that led to the death of a man from Chesterfield, via WTVR. Nico Rivera initially faced 2nd degree murder charges in the death of Jacob Baldwin after an altercation in the early hours of October 12, 2024, but accepted a plea deal for a lesser charge which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail.

  • The fall edition of Richmond Restaurant Week has begun, with 27 local restaurants offering a three-course meal with a portion of the sales going to Feed More. Check out the list of restaurants here. Feed More was created in 2008 from the merger of the Central Virginia Food Bank and Meals on Wheels, and provides food to 34 central Virginia cities and counties.
