Plastic Bags, Poetry, and Pride Month

Cheers RVA!

Today will be sunny with a high of 85 and a low of 59 in the evening.

the juice:

Richmond City Council approved a 5-cent tax on plastic bags at Monday’s council meeting, with the council voting 6-2-1 to approve the ordinance.

The tax is set go in effect in 2026, with four cents going to the city and one cent going to the business.

Exemptions include reusable durable bags with handles, bags used to wrap meat, fish and other perishable items, prescription drug and dry cleaning bags, and bags sold in packages intended for trash and pet waste.

The revenue is appropriated for environmental cleanup, mitigating pollution and litter, and providing reusable bags for recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The office of sustainability has projected $400k in revenue in the first year of the tax going into effect.

Many of the counties in northern Virginia already have plastic bag taxes, as well as the cities of Charlottesville and Roanoke.

the pulp:

  • The city is asking for feedback from the community regarding a new $38 million bridge to replace the 75-year old bridge that spans the CSX railroad adjacent to Scott’s Addition and the Diamond District. A community meeting will take place on June 11 at the Science Museum.
