People's Budget Project Tracking and Strange Homes in History

Today will be partly cloudy and humid, with a high of 81 and a low of 69, with a chance of a stray thunderstorm. The week ahead looks cooler than recent weeks with highs in the low 80’s.

One man was killed and two others were seriously injured after a shooting occurred early Sunday morning at the Southwood Apartments off Hull Street in South Richmond.

The incident remains under investigation.

There have been 40 homicides in the city so far this year, as compared to 39 at this time last year.

  • The People’s Budget staff has begun tracking the various projects selected as part of Richmond’s first participatory budget process. An online version is expected to be posted soon. There will be two focus group opportunities to learn about the PB and city government engagement, with the first meeting scheduled for August 28.

  • The Richmond City School Board is leaning towards rejecting a proposal by a tennis groups’ proposal to build a $15 million eight-court indoor tennis facility on landed owned by RPS near Byrd Park, according to Victoria Ifatusin at the Richmonder. Part of the proposal includes the group funding the refurbishment of outdoor courts at various Richmond Schools, with board members raising concerns over specifics and long term maintenance costs.

  • Administrative leaders from Richmond and the surrounding counties will meet today to review and evaluate capital investment plans regarding water infrastructure and security.

  • Jeff Terich at the RTD has compiled a list of the strangest homes in the history of Richmond, including a house built on Sharp’s Island, one of the smallest islands in the James.
