New Habitat for Humanity Homes, Torchy's Closures, and Scott's Offer

Cheers RVA!

Today will be partly sunny with a high of 76 and a low of 63.

the juice:

Scott Burger of OregonHill.net is upping the prize money for the first Richmond university to incorporate ranked-choice voting into its student government elections.

The original prize offered in 2022 was $1k, but Burger is now promising to award $500 to the second university to satisfy the contest. If no university does so within a year, he will award the additional $500 to the first university.

The student government associations of VCU, VUU, and U of R are eligible for the prize, and must incorporate the change in the election process into their respective bylaws/constitution.

James Madison, UVA, Washington and Lee and George Mason currently use ranked-choice voting.

the pulp:

  • The Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity has offered the city $100k to purchase city-owned property to build 11 affordable homes on Northside near the former Albert V. Norrell Elementary School, via the Richmonder. The planning commission has approved the sale and a final decision will move on to City Council.

  • Two Torchy’s Tacos locations will be closing in Carytown and Midlothian at the end of this month, according to Bizsense. The Short Pump location will remain open. All three locations opened in 2023.

the dive:

The 1500-pound bronze statue of Jefferson Davis (on loan from the Valentine) is on its way to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles as part of an exhibit on confederate monuments:

The exhibition reflects on the histories and legacies of post-Civil War America as they continue to resonate today, bringing together a selection of decommissioned monuments, many of which are Confederate, with contemporary artworks borrowed and newly created for the occasion.

The exhibition will present decommissioned monuments from a number of other cities, including Charlottesville, Raleigh, New Orleans, Baltimore, and Montgomery.

According to WTVR, the Valentine will soon install one of the basketball hoops that protesters put up at Lee Circle, renamed Marcus David Peters circle during the summer protests of 2020.

the vibe:

Have an industrious day RVA!
