Museums, Parking Citations, and a Heat Dome

Cheers RVA!

Today will be very hot and humid, with a high of 101 and a low of 77 in the evening. The next few days are looking similar as a heat wave affects nearly half of the United States. Stay hydrated and minimize time outdoors in direct sunshine if possible.

the juice:

Much of the East Coast will feel the effects of the heat dome this week, a large area of high pressure in the upper atmosphere that traps heat and humidity and keeps clouds away.

The evenings are not expected to be much cooler either, as humidity increases at night.

Sean Jones of the RTD notes how the National Weather Service in Wakefield issues advisories:

Should they reach 110 degrees, Wakefield will issue an Extreme Heat Warning. That recommends avoiding heavy activity and exposure to direct sunlight.

Such conditions can be especially dangerous for children, pets and the elderly.

Temperatures just below 110 degrees would necessitate an Extreme Heat Watch, which recommends rescheduling activities and making sure vulnerable people have places to cool off during the heat.

the pulp:

  • The Gallery at Main Street Station will showcase a new micro exhibit this week showcasing art celebrating Juneteenth, Queer Pride, and Black Music Month, via RVA.gov.

  • RICToday has compiled a guide to 30 Museums in town, including opportunities to learn about history, art and science.

the dive:

The Richmonder did a deep dive into the parking citations from the last eight years and found the city issues an average of 11k tickets each month.

Victoria Ifatusin writes:

The city issued those tickets with the help of SP Plus Corp., which has a five-year contract with the city to issue citations (police officers are also allowed to write tickets). SP Plus is working on a five-year, $28 million contract to perform those services. The contract runs through December 2026, according to city spokesperson Michael Hinkle.

During that period about 46k tickets have been contested with around 25k of those being voided.

Between 1k to 2.5k cars are towed each year, at a cost of $120, up from $105 in 2023.

The standard parking violation is set to increase from $25 to $30 in July.
