Competing tax legislation regarding the real estate tax rate has been proposed by City Council and will be considered by the Finance and Economic Development Committee this Wednesday, with a vote likely at the next council meeting on Monday, September 22.
An ordinance lowering the rate from $1.20 to $1.16 is supported by patrons Reva Trammell, Sarah Abubaker, and Stephanie Lynch.
Councilmember Katherine Jordan of the 2nd district has stated she will support maintaining the current rate as she has done the last four years, arguing that the average annual relief for homeowners would be just $150 while corporate property owners would save hundreds of thousands of dollars. Additionally, the lower rate would eliminate upwards of $17 million in revenue for the city.
The rate has not been lowered by the council since 2008.
the pulp:

Students who were born in another country and recently arrived at RPS (known as newcomers) number just 10 students so far this year, down from 465 last year. Enrollment continues throughout the year so that number is likely to increase.
