Monday Bike Bros and Allianz Price Modeling

Cheers RVA!

Today will be partly cloudy with potential afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with a high of 84 and a low of 70. The week ahead is expected to be slightly hotter and more humid, with highs around 90.

the juice:

A pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning on Hull Street Road in Chesterfield county after being struck by a vehicle.

The driver did not remain at the scene and the incident is still under investigation.

While pedestrian crashes make up only 1% of all traffic crashes in the state, they account for 17% of all traffic deaths, via WTVR.

There have been 75 fatalities involving pedestrian crashes in Virginia so far this year.

the pulp:

  • Andy Thompson from the Richmonder goes into the story behind the ‘Monday Bike Bros’, a weekly bike ride formed in 2017:

Bike Monday Bros has been a weekly occurrence ever since. Ramsey is the ride lead. He sets the route, to the extent there is one. Depending on the weather, anywhere from 40-90 riders meet at the Starbucks in the Fan and ride for a couple of hours. The pace, to borrow from Cecil, remains a “piddle.” No one gets dropped for any reason. Everyone is welcome. More than politics or recreation or exercise, community is the point.

The group meets Mondays at the Starbucks on Robinson Street in the Fan at 5:30 and the ride begins at 6:00 pm.

  • RICToday has compiled a list of spots in Richmond to get lunch for under $15.

the dive:

Dave Infante, the man behind the Church Hill Lookout, dives into the cost of alcoholic beverages at the new Allianz Ampitheater, where a 24 oz. can of Modelo Especial costs $19.50.

Infante writes:

It stands to reason that concertgoers would pay a premium for the Amphitheater’s concessions. But even looking further afield, to the upper echelons of the country’s top-tier sports leagues, its prices stand out. According to data from Bookies.com published in September 2024 by VinePair, a beverage publication, 75% of National Football League stadiums charged less per ounce of beer on average last season than Richmond’s newest concert venue is getting for Modelo this year. Ditto, nearly half of National Basketball Association arenas.

Beverage prices at the Allianz Ampitheatre are about 60% higher than at the Diamond or Friday Cheers, and about twice the cost as drinks at City Stadium.

At Richmond Raceway, where NASCAR weekend begins this Thursday culminating in the Cookout 400 on Saturday, August 16, attendees are allowed to bring their own drinks and coolers into the venue.
