Cheers RVA!
Another day of potential scattered thunderstorms with a high of 75. The weekend should stay between 50 and the low 70’s, mostly sunny.
the juice:
Our first correction! The Byrd theater will be showing “Big Trouble in Little China” on Tuesday the 14th at 7pm. Friday’s show will be “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” Thanks to the subscriber who noticed the error and as always feel free to reach out with feedback about the newsletter.
the pulp:
After zoning approval, data center developer pays $33M for 1,200 acres in Hanover from Jack Jacobs at Bizsense
Youngkin, lawmakers reach deal on Virginia state budget per channel 6
17-year-old injured in Richmond triple shooting charged with murder from Channel 8. The shooting took place April 11 in Mosby court, where two people were found dead and a third injured from the shooting.
Lawsuit already filed in Diamond district development decision from Fox Richmond. Paul Goldman claims the city violated the state constitution, Richmond city charter and the first amendment rights of himself and other citizens, and that Richmonders should have been able to cast a vote.
Some VCU graduates intend to walk out when Youngkin takes the stage to speak at commencement, per the street.

A thank you to whoever installed the bike pump at Shiplock Park from r/rva:
the tangent:
“The Greatest Roast of All Time” premiered live on Netflix last Sunday night: three hours of a myriad of former players, comedians and celebrities roasting former NFL player and the goat, Tom Brady.
Rich Eisen called it a “therapy session for the Patriots”. He also works for NFL Network.
Mad Dog Russo called it “the worst piece of garbage” but was mostly in the minority with that opinion amongst talking sportsheads.
The New Yorker loved it.
Dan Patrick enjoyed parts of it, but kept wondering why Tom Brady did it.
The LA Times, among other publications, noted it was odd which joke by roastmaster Jeff Ross crossed the line:
So Tom became a Patriot and moved up to New England, and on the first day of training camp, that scrawny rookie famously
walked into the owner Robert Kraft‘s office and said, ‘I’m the best decision your organization has ever made. Would you like a massage?
Apparently jokes about Robert Kraft’s arrest and Brady’s children were off limits. What was not off limits?
Jokes about Gisele’s new boyfriend since the divorce, booze, Jews, Hamas, Aaron Hernandez’s conviction of murder, and Aaron Hernandez’s suicide, which was referenced multiple times from Edleman and Brady.
The crudeness didn’t bother me personally, and I didn’t watch the whole thing. I found Bill Belicheck’s set the most interesting. But the vibe of the whole debacle, the obsession with celebrity, the crudeness, was just weird. And I guess that was the intent.
the dive:
The Richmond Free Press provides perspective on the 8th District’s Dawn Page not running for re-election after serving the board for 8 years:
In addition to Ms. Page’s announcement, it has also been revealed that the School Board is not in compliance with state requirements of annual professional development and training.
Can’t say I’ve ever heard of a public school teacher anywhere respecting devoting time to professional development, so I’d expect school board members to feel the same. As reported a couple weeks ago in CheersRVA, many school board members were not actively listening during the one-hour professional development held during the April 22 meeting.
The Richmond Free Press article goes further:
The School Board is risking the loss of some state funding due to its noncompliance with the agreement, but it has an opportunity to rectify their status. If done so in a timely manner, some or all of the board’s at-risk, add-on funding could be restored by the Virginia Board of Education.
Political back and forth.
one board member was not able to attend due to vow renewals in Las Vegas that same weekend, according to area news reports.
Juicy.
Mariah White, 2nd District representative, did not agree with the idea of a two-day training and explained that her work obligations may interfere. Dr. Shonda Harris-Muhammed, 6th District representative, also questioned why the training was for two days instead of one day. Ms. Rizzi explained that while the training is not usually for two days, the state was specific about their requirements for a two-day training.
City v State.
Dr. Harris-Muhammed explained that as a team, it would be best to focus on “what needs to happen and not why (the training) didn’t happen.” Cheryl Burke, 7th District representative, agreed that it is time to move things along.
The motion passed to proceed with a two-day training.
The reporting I can find on the RPS school board is very limited, but shout-out to the Richmond Free Press.
the vibe:
Looking forward to an active weekend without excessive heat. Have a splendid day RVA!
