ICE Agents at the Courthouse, Regional Cooperation, and Texas Beach Skatepark

Cheers RVA!

The excessive heat continues today with partly cloudy skies and a high of 100, with a low of 77 and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures in the coming days are expected to cool down just a tad but will remain in the 90’s in the afternoons.

the juice:

Fourteen individuals have been detained by ICE agents at the Chesterfield Courthouse over the last three days, according the Chesterfield County Sheriff Karl Leonard.

Leonard has said he has instructed his employees not to assists in the arrests but he cannot interfere as the agents have the legal authority to detain people.

Luca Powell from the RTD reports on one particular situation at the courthouse on Tuesday:

Diaz was directed into a witness chamber within one of the courtrooms by a sheriff’s deputy, where he met two plainclothes officers with no visible law enforcement identification. Then, he was escorted out the back entrance of the courthouse and into an unmarked car.

Powell notes that while Cesar Diaz was appearing in court on a misdemeanor charge, he had served a month in jail in 2010 for possession of cocaine and was found guilty of a DWI in 2023.

Sheriff Leonard has stated he does not intend to sign an agreement to collaborate with ICE.

The agreement, known as a 287(g) agreement, has been signed by just 13 localities in Virginia since Governor Youngkin encouraged cities and counties to do so in February.

the pulp:

  • The Henrico County Board of Supervisors have agreed to meeting with Richmond City Council and Mayor Avula to discuss the region’s water supply and Richmond water treatment plant, via the Citizen.

  • Richard Hayes from RVAHub has shared some neat photos from a Venue Skateboarders gathering at Texas Beach Skatepark on Saturday.

the vibe:

Have a towering day RVA!
