Gun-Free Zones, Tournament Gaming, and a Fundraising Update

VCU was ranked the #72 Public University in the United States, and #139 overall out of more than 1700 educational institutions in U.S. News’ 2026 rankings.

The School of Nursing Program was tied for #40 in the nation.

VCU has 23 graduate, undergraduate and online programs that rank in the top 50.

the pulp:

  • Richmond is considering creating gun-free zones in Shockoe Bottom and other entertainment areas such as Scott’s Addition and Carytown, via WTVR. The process would require 75% of property owners in the area to agree, as well a posted designation and public comment period.

  • Chimbaroza Elementary School’s independent fundraiser to build a playground for its students in grades 3-5 has raised more than $80k, about one-third of the total goal of $250k.

Nicole Cohen for Richmond Magazine dives into the local tournament gaming scene, with Super Smash Bros. tourneys being one of the most common opportunities to test one’s skills.

They come armed with custom-modified controllers and strategies honed by both mistakes made and successes achieved. They wait for their bracket to come up, take their seats, and start mashing buttons and making calculated moves with clacks of their joysticks. Selecting recognizable Nintendo avatars such as Mario, Pikachu and Kirby, players take on their competitors to be the champion (usually winning a small monetary prize). This is a Super Smash Bros. tournament.
