the juice:
The City of Richmond reported a $22 million surplus for fiscal year 2025, according to the Richmonder. The extra revenue is more than the $17.2 million cost of lowering the real estate property tax by 4 cents (that proposal was rejected by City Council last month.)
Mandatory surplus policies require the city to allocate 50% of the surplus would go to the rainy day fund and 40% for maintenance of city buildings, schools and infrastructure. Mayor Avula has suggested using the remaining 10% for affordable housing activities.
The annual operating budget for the city is just over $1 billion.
the pulp:
The East End Solar Meadow Project is holding a community meeting tonight at Ashley Oaks in Montrose Heights beginning at 6:30 pm, via RICtoday. The city’s Office of Sustainability is partnering with Ameresco, Inc. to bring a new solar farm and pollinator garden to the 7th District. Take a survey regarding the proposal here (it takes two minutes).
RVA Magazine’s “Support Local, Vote Local” annual reader’s poll is now open. Vote on everything from the best pizza to your favorite local dive bar.
the vibe:
