Fantasy Operators and Rain
Cheers RVA!
Today will be overcast with potential showers and thunderstorms, a high of 90. The projected UV index of 5 is half of what it’s been the past few weeks.
the pulp:
A 17-year-old was hospitalized after a shooting in South Richmond Tuesday night. An altercation occurred prior to the shooting and police have detained a juvenile suspect, from 12 on your side.
The Richmond Ivy will play their final game of the inaugural season on Friday at 7 pm at City Stadium. The Ivy are currently 6-5-1 heading into their final match.
the haps:
RVA Mag reports on how the All City Art Club worked with the city to turn the Carytown Parking Deck into a street art gallery.
R. Anthony Harris sits down with one of the Club’s founders, Silly Genius for an interview here.
the dive:
Virginia could clear up the fuzzy line between sports betting and fantasy contests, from Graham Moomaw at the Mercury.
In 2016 Virginia legalized betting on fantasy sports, where players compete against other players.
In 2020 sports betting was legalized, where players bet on the outcome of a game.
Virginia currently has 17 fantasy operators and 15 sports betting sites.
Many sites under the guise of “fantasy operators” are now offering pick‘em style betting where bets are places on the over/under stat line of a particular player’s performance.
Moomaw notes the difference in how the two forms of gambling are regulated:
Sports betting is regulated by the Virginia Lottery, which requires betting platforms to pay a $250,000 fee when first applying for a permit and a $200,000 yearly renewal fee. Fantasy sports are overseen by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), which assesses an $8,300 fee for initial permits and yearly renewals.
Regular sports betting apps also generate money devoted to gambling addiction resources. Fantasy apps do not.
Apparently the VDACS does not collect data on how much money is bet on fantasy sports, but the Lottery notes Virginians bet $5.3 billion in 2023 on sports.
the vibe:
