Data Centers and Sticky Rice
Cheers RVA!
The heat continues today with a high of 90. Saturday is looking a tad cooler, with scattered storms and showers expected Sunday.
the juice:
A data center development is planned for the Azalea Flea Market site, Jonathan Spiers from Bizsense reports.
The 27-acre site is owned by BWS-Enterprises, a local group working with Atlanta-based DC Blox on a two building project, beginning with 10 megawatt facility in a 70k sq. ft. building.
Additional plans include the construction of a second building with 30-megawatt capacity.
According to the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Virginia is host to the largest data market in the world, with 35% of the roughly 150 hyperscale data centers worldwide.
Hyperscale data centers are typically defined as those with 10-50 MW in capacity.
the pulp:
A pro-casino campaign office has opened in Petersburg, with a opening ceremony held yesterday by Bruce Smith Enterprise and the Cordish Companies. Petersburg City residents will vote in a referendum this November on whether to build the casino.
A man was shot on Richmond’s Northside on the 2400 block of Dunn Ave. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, from channel 8.
The man who shot a buck in Hollywood Cemetery will serve 3 months in jail and has been fined over $2k, as well as being banned from hunting for 24 years and ordered to pay $11k in restitution. The buck was killed last December, and photos were posted on Facebook claiming it was from Prince Edward county. Officials recognized the buck and determined it was killed illegally in Hollywood Cemetery.
the dive:
Sticky Rice is turning 25. RVA Mag’s Christian Detres dives in on the story of the “Rock-n-roll Dive that Defined a Generation.”
You can also watch a video of Carson Daly asking who is Sticky Rice on TRL.
They played music videos on the big screen on the wall instead of sports. They hired bartenders deliberately for their DJ skills. They pulled pranks on their patrons. They pulled pranks on Richmond as a whole. They had anniversary parties with mud wrestling pits and mechanical bulls. There are literally dozens of people in this city and dispersed across the world with Sticky Rice logo tattoos. And they were just getting started.

the vibe:
A reddit user found this fellow on the cap trail, the sleuths determined it was a budgie, native to Australia, and therefore a lost pet bird.
