Cheers RVA!

the juice:

The Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront officially opened Wednesday with a ceremony and a performance by St Andrew’s students.

The first official show takes place this Friday featuring Rick Springfield as part of the “I want my 80’s tour.” Springfield, who scored a hit with “Jessie’s Girl” in 1980, will be joined by John Waite, Wang Chung, and John Cafferty.

the pulp:

  • The Richmond Public School board unanimously voted to pass the finalized budget on Tuesday, via Victoria Ifatusin at the Richmonder. The board also debated five options for what to do with the Clark Springs Elementary building now that Fox School is set to reopen in the fall.

  • R. Anthony Harris from RVAMag offers an optimistic look at how the city is “getting Richmond’s parks right”, writing:

The city just landed at #16 in the Trust for Public Land’s 2025 ParkScore Index, which ranks the 100 largest U.S. cities based on access, equity, investment, amenities, and acreage. That’s a solid jump from #22 last year—and a massive leap from #58 in 2018.

the dive:

A man is facing charges in Charlottesville after spraying chalk to create a crosswalk on a street located near an intersection where a pedestrian was killed last October via the Guardian.

Traffic safety activist Kevin Cox had been advocating with the city to install a pedestrian crossing there but to no avail, so he took the matter in his own hands. Cox reportedly wrote in an email to the city manager:

There is a marked crosswalk now [at the intersection in question] in spite of you … It’s chalk[,] not paint[.] Please replace it with a real one.

Officials determined the markings were unable to be removed and painted black paint over the crosswalk.

Cox has been accused of committing vandalism and has a court date tentatively scheduled for July 14.
