Blocktoberfest, a New Election Poll, and a FOIA Library
Cheers RVA!
Today will be sunny and breezy, with a high of 69 and a low of 42.
the juice:
VCU has released its Commonwealth poll for the upcoming election, with Abigail Spanberger leading Winsome Earle-Sears 49% to 42% in the race for governor.
Ghazala Hashmi leads John Reid 44% to 43% in the race for Lieutenant Governor, well within the poll’s 3.95% margin of error (based on a sample size of 842 adults).
Jason Miyares leads Jay Johnson 45% to 42% in the race for attorney general.
The election takes place on Tuesday, November 4th.
the pulp:
RICtoday has compiled a list of major ongoing development projects in the city, including the $16 million Mayo Island project and the $30 million Brown’s Island project, both of which are expected to be completed next year.
The first annual Bellevue Blocktoberfest will take place along the 1200 block of Bellevue Avenue this Saturday from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. The event will feature “music, beer, food, and neighborhood fun.”
the dive:
Graham Moomaw from the Richmonder dives into two proposals for a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) library that city council is considering.
Councilmember Kenya Gibson introduced legislation for a comprehensive library, while Mayor Danny Avula has proposed a more limited concept.
Moomaw writes:
Neither plan would require the city to release more government records than it currently does. The city could still avoid publishing sensitive documents by invoking the wide variety of FOIA exemptions in Virginia law. The legislation only requires the city to make released records more widely available by publishing the documents online.
Avula and numerous Council members campaigned last year on boosting transparency at City Hall and have continued to tout openness with the public as a priority. The FOIA library debate this fall will force policymakers to decide just how much transparency they’re comfortable with.
