Bike to Work (in the rain), A Six Point Bump in Property Tax, and the Lt. Gov. Race

Cheers RVA!

Today will be overcast with scattered rain showers, with a high of 73 and a low of 64. Thunderstorms are likely tomorrow, with warmer temperatures and clearer skies expected later in the week.

the juice:

Today national bike to work week begins, and RVA Bikeshare is inviting residents to bike to work.

They are running a promotion on X and IG for their electric bikes, with the first 50 riders to redeem a daily code receiving a free 45-minute ride. Find the codes on IG @rvabike_share and X: @rvabikeshare.

RVA Bikeshare has 20 self-service stations across the city.

Bikeshare stations in Richmond

RVA Bikeshare is a program of the Office of Equitable Transit and Mobility, a division of the Department of Public Works.

the pulp:

  • A man was shot and killed at 600 South 2nd street near Belle Isle early Sunday morning, via WTVR.

  • Richmond residents can expect a 6% increase in property tax assessments this September, but will then not see another assessment until May of 2027, as the city syncs up its budgeting and assessments timeline, according to Graham Moomaw at the Richmonder. While the value will remain the same in 2026, there could be a “double whammy” increase in 2027 reflecting two years worth of property value growth.

the dive:

Anna Bryson from the RTD dives into the six Democratic candidates running for lieutenant governor of Virginia.

The winner of the June 17 primary will join Abigail Spanberger on the Democratic ticket for governor.

The main duties of the position are to preside over the state senate and break ties, as well as being the first in line of succession to the governor.

Bryson notes:

The position — with a salary of $36,321 — also comes with a bully pulpit to promote a policy agenda and can be springboard to the governorship. Five of the state’s last 10 lieutenant governors — before incumbent Winsome Earle-Sears—went on to be elected governor. Earle-Sears, the GOP nominee for governor, hopes to become the next to make the leap.

The candidates include Ghazala Hashmi, a state senator from Chesterfield and former Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney.
