Richmonders have elected Danny Avula as the next mayor. Avula won a plurality in six of the nine districts, with Michelle Mosby winning the other three. Overall, Avula won 44% of the total vote, with Mosby, Roday, Addison and Neblett receiving 25%, 13%, 12%, and 3% of the vote, respectively.
Six of the City Council seats remain unchanged, with the incumbents winning reelection, except in the 3rd District where Kenya Gibson defeated incumbent Ann-Frances Lambert and challenger Maria Carra Rose. Gumby Breton won the 1st district and Sarah Abubaker won the 4th in an unchallenged race.
The School Board also shifted, with challengers defeating the incumbent in the 2nd and 4th district. The 1st, 3rd, and 8th were also won by new candidates, totaling five new members to the School Board.
Nearly 97k Richmonders voted in the local elections.

Petersburg will get a casino after 82% of voters approved the referendum to bring the Live! Casino Resort to town.
Disco Sports is closing its retail store in Henrico after 54 years in business. It will continue its team division supplying uniforms and equipment to schools and leagues, via the Henrico Citizen.

The Shockoe Examiner dives into the history behind the “gateways” constructed at the original site of Richmond College on Grace St., which later became the University of Richmond.
President Boatwright served for 51 years beginning in 1894, and is credited with moving the campus to the Westhampton area in 1914.
In 1916 the city granted permission to build two pylons to honor the old campus, and Boatwright was inspired by the Pont Alexandre III Bridge in Paris, with its prominent towers.
The eastern pair of Boatwright’s pylons stand today at Ryland and Grace, with the western pair at Lombardy and Grace.
