Beginning February 3, Armed Public Safety Officers and Public Safety Ambassadors will be patrolling the GRTC bus system in an effort to address concerns of driver safety, according to Joi Fultz at WTVR.
A spokesperson for GRTC said they looked at other bus systems around the country to develop the program.
Per the GRTC website:
Public Safety Officers will focus on maintaining a secure environment, deterring potential disruptions, and ensuring swift responses to incidents. Working closely with local law enforcement and community partners, they are equipped to address safety concerns proactively.
The security officers will be on duty every day from 6 am to 11 pm and will travel on buses and walk around major stops to help riders feel secure.
