A Withdrawn Federal Grant, the Clear Redline, and Widespread Panic

Cheers RVA!

Today we’ll see a mix of clouds and sunshine, with less humidity and a breeze, with a high of 78 and a low of 54.

the juice:

A woman has died in the hospital after being found with a gunshot wound in her car on Westover Hills Boulevard on Sunday evening, via WTVR.

The city has had 24 homicides so far this year, compared with 21 at this time last year.

the pulp:

  • A $30k federal grant to local arts community organization Studio Two Three has been withdrawn by the National Endowment of the Arts, according to RVAMag.

  • A local filmmaker who created The Clear Redline, a short documentary about Gilpin Court and how Richmond was divided and remains so today, is looking for feedback from those living in Fairfield Court for the next part of the documentary series, via reddit.

  • The band ‘Widespread Panic’ will play two shows at the Allianz Amphitheater in September, with tickets set to go on sale Friday. Founding member and bassist David Schools is a Richmond native and graduate of Collegiate, with the band having played Richmond over 30 times, the latest in 2016.

the dive:

Governor Youngkin has removed nearly $900 million from the state budget citing the risk of short-term disruptions as a reason to limit spending, according to Charlotte Rene Woods at the Mercury.

Many of the projects removed are one-time capital projects at public colleges and universities still in the planning stages.

Woods writes:

At the start of the 2025 legislative session both Youngkin and members of Virginia’s General Assembly had their eyes on how best to use the windfall. But after Trump took office in late January, Youngkin announced Friday that he was setting aside a $900 million cushion to prepare for potential federal impacts.
