A Train Wreck and the Darlington Oak

Today will be mostly cloudy with a high of 63 and a low of 46. The week ahead will be mostly cloudy with mid-week showers expected before a potentially sunny weekend.

the juice:

A CSX freight train carrying coal derailed in New Kent on Saturday causing a disruption to Amtrak service between Richmond and Newport News.

No one was injured and no hazardous materials were involved.

Trains 99, 96, and 124 have been cancelled until further notice.

the pulp:

  • The Department of Public Works (DPW) is relocating the Recycling Drop-Off and Compost Site from Stratford Hills Shopping Center to a larger location at 7400 Forest Hill Avenue, beginning October 28.

  • The Richmond 8k is now officially sold out. The half marathon and full marathon have already sold out. Waitlists are open for all three of the November 15 events.

  • RICToday has compiled a list of 25+ events taking place in Richmond in November, including the Garden Glow which begins November 1 at Maymont.

Rachel Kester from the Richmonder explores five of the city’s most unique trees, including the White Oak gravestone in Hollywood Cemetery and Church Hill’s Ginkgos.

Regarding the Darlington Oak tree in Maymont, Kester writes:

Situated just below the mansion near the Robins Nature Center, the tree is estimated to be anywhere from 200 to 250 years old and has a 76-inch diameter and height of 74 feet, making this a national champion tree (the largest of its kind in the country).
