A Traffic Enforcement Operation, Radical Transparency, and the Virginia Pride Festival

Cheers RVA!

Today will be mostly cloudy with a high of 83 and a low of 68, with a slight chance of showers. Cooler temperatures are expected this weekend with highs in the low 70’s and rain and thunderstorms likely.

the juice:

City leaders gathered in Maymont Park on Thursday in a symbolic celebration for a new approach to how the city creates its annual budget, according to the Richmonder.

A new budget won’t be passed until next spring, but more public feedback and a longer time window for city council to review and make proposals are among the changes in the process.

the pulp:

  • Councilmember Kenya Gibson of the 3rd district has proposed an ordinance that would bring “radical transparency” to City Hall, via WTVR. The proposal would establish a Freedom of Infromation Act (FOIA) library that would publish the FOIA requests the city receives, documents it releases, and the fees it charges.

  • Chesterfield Police will conduct a traffic enforcement operation today near the intersection of Courthouse Road and Lucks Lane, from WWBT. Previous similar efforts have resulted in hundreds of vehicles getting pulled over ticketed.

  • The Virginia Pride Festival takes place on Saturday from noon to 8:00 pm at Midtown Green (formerly the Washington Commanders Training Camp facility and Bon Secours Training Center), via RVAMag.

the dive:

Dina Weinstein from the Citizen dives into the use of Richmond International Airport as a hub for ICE deportations.

Shackled individuals have been loaded onto planes with no attributed owner more than 80 times this year, according to Humans Rights First and Citizen observations.

Weinstein writes:

Human Rights First reports that those people then have in many cases been flown (either directly or indirectly) to the country’s largest U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement hub in Alexandria, Louisiana, where more than 1,000 deportation flights from cities throughout the U.S. have landed since January.

These are not flights that RIC passengers on Delta, American Airlines or Southwest routes will see listed on the arrival or departure screens in the main terminal. These passengers never enter the terminal’s doors, since Richmond Jet Center (the fixed-base operator facilitating the flights) operates as a private terminal.
