A Suspect Surrenders, the Mayorathon, and a License Plate Reader Ruling

A suspect has surrendered in the deadly assault that occurred in Scott’s addition last week, via channel 8. The suspect has been charged with 2nd degree murder.
The connection of 6th district candidate for City Council Tavares Floyd to “his cousin” George Floyd is being called into question, via Samuel Parker at the RTD. Tavares Floyd’s sister is quoted as saying the connection between the two is a “big lie”.
A city of Richmond committee has approved the use of Main Street Station by Greyhound for the next two years, via channel 6.
The Richmond Economic Development Authority will soon be looking to field proposals for renovation or restoration of the Intermediate Terminal Warehouse near Rockett’s Landing, from Bizsense.
The 2024 Mayorathon is tonight at 6 pm at the Virginia Musuem of History Culture. BikeWalkRVA notes at a similar event back in 2016 they were able to get candidates talking about bike lanes on stage in front of a packed crowd.

A Federal Judge has upheld Richmond’s use of license plate cameras, via Graham Moomaw at the Richmonder.
The defendant in the case had committed a string of armed robberies and was tracked down by law enforcement using Flock systems license plate readers.
US District Judge Robert Payne ruled the cameras are not an invasion of privacy.
Payne wrote:
As a society, we have come to expect the public surveillance of our vehicle as we travel on public roads. We understand that, at any given time in public, a camera may take a picture of our vehicle.
Moomaw notes the ruling could have a bearing on other ongoing legal challenges to the technology:
Flock’s technology will soon face a new legal test in Virginia. This week, the libertarian-leaning Institute for Justice announced it was representing two Norfolk-area residents in a federal lawsuit challenging the city’s use of the cameras.
