A Protest, a Hit and Run, and Budget Process Collaboration

Cheers RVA!

Today will be mostly sunny with a high of 78 and a low of 56. The sunny weather is expected to continue this week with highs approaching the upper 80’s.

the juice:

Hundreds of people gathered at Monroe Park and marched to the Capitol on Monday to participate in the “Workers over Billionaires” protests.

The demonstration was organized by RVA Indivisible and the 50501va organization.

Similar Labor Day protests took place in hundreds of cities around the country.

the pulp:

  • Dashcam footage captured a hit and run incident where a vehicle hit a cyclist on Leigh Street on Friday evening, via WWBT. Cyclist Bryan Pecora was hit by a vehicle turning left onto Belvidere Street. He is okay aside from a sore wrist and a few bruises. Pecora noted it was an honest mistake as the driver did not see him but was disappointed that a number of other drivers did not stop after the crash.

  • The sixth annual edition of Ride and Dive took place on Saturday, with around 120 cyclists biking to all seven of the city’s outdoor public swimming pools. Aside from a couple of flat tires, the event went smoothly with all of the pools being open, and swimmers had access to the diving boards that were installed last year at Hotchkiss and Randolph pools. A new edition this year was the addition of “bike security” that kept an eye on the bikes as it was difficult to find enough spots to lock so many bicycles.

the dive:

The Richmond City Council and Richmond Public School Board met last Thursday evening for the first time in three years, via Victoria Ifatusin at the Richmonder.

The two groups are hoping to better understand the intricacies of the budget process, agreeing that more funding is needed from the state.

Analyses of the various organizational budgets and potential pressure points for FY 2027 were discussed as well.

Ifatusin writes:

The city is putting together a work group that will discuss creating a funding formula, which would help RPS have certainty on how much the division will get from the city each year. That possibility wasn't discussed on Thursday, but representatives from the groups will convene in September to begin talks.
