A Midyear Crime Report and a Real Estate Agent Who Loves The Beatles
Cheers RVA!
Things cool off today with a high of 80 and a 90% chance of precipitation. Thunderstorms and local heavy rain are likely. Saturday is looking hotter with a chance of rain and Sunday could be hot and sunny again.
the juice:
The Richmond Police Department shared their midyear stats, with homicides down 29% from this time last year as a positive note for the city.
There have been 57 shooting victims this year in Richmond compared with 65 last year. Police Chief Rick Edwards noted that often the intent in shootings is murder, and “luck, the angle of the bullet, and the skill of the surgeon” often play a role in the outcome of a shooting.
Reported violent crimes decreased marginally, and traffic fatalities decreased as well.
Vehicle theft incidents decreased slightly in Richmond, but Chesterfield County notes a rise in auto thefts.
CCPD reported that roughly 35% of vehicle thefts were incidents where the keys were left in the vehicle and advises citizens to lock their cars rather than leaving them running while they visit a convenience store.
Individual robberies have also slightly increased in Richmond.
The RPD shared data on arrests during Operation Safe Summer, and noted the efficacy of the 15-minute stops police do in each of the 21 identified “hot spots” in the city, where police engage with the community when a crime is not occurring.
the pulp:
GRTC is expanding their Route 1 service. The route previously ran along Chamberlayne to Azalea but will now go down Brook Rd. to Parham and include access to Reynolds Community College, from the Henrico Citizen.
The 7/11 near VCU on Main St. was robbed at gunpoint early Thursday morning. The suspect fled on foot and the incident is under investigation.
the dive:
Reddit is certainly a cautionary place to find good information, but this particular thread caught my attention.
If you’re interested in real estate in Richmond I recommend diving into this post on the current state of the local market.
The poster claims to be a top agent in the area and offers opinions on various parts of the city, as well as the market as a whole.
Manchester/Swansboro is about the same as it was last year. I do see more renovations and flips as the tendrils of gentrification weave through all the little side streets. This area is really frustrating for me because on one hand you have tons of people on reddit saying it is “up-and-coming” and then also say the flips are garbage (I don’t disagree) which makes the pool of potential homes really limited that I would consider worth any degree of time or consideration. A lot of people I take down here just don’t like the area and usually settle on something in the north/northeast side of town. Make of that what you will.
The longform post also uses Beatles’ lyrics as headlines to each section which I found amusing.
Of course it is reddit so half the comments are bad jokes, but the post itself is respectable.
the vibe:
Have a pleasant day and a wonderful weekend RVA!
