A Canal Bridge Project and Fox Reopens

The City of Richmond and Department of Public Works is hosting a public meeting regarding the Hull Street over Manchester Canal Bridge project at Main Street Station tonight from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

The project concerns a small bridge traversing the canal after the end of the Mayo Bridge when traveling towards downtown from Manchester.

The Mayo Bridge Replacement Project is still in design but the most recent proposal in an application for a federal grant includes two buffered bike lanes, a sidewalk and a shared-use path.

  • William Fox Elementary School will host a ribbon cutting tonight at 5:30 pm to celebrate the grand reopening of the school, which was severely damaged and subsequently closed after a fire in February 2022. Tours of the newly renovated building will be available as well as ice cream.

  • The roof of the new Squirrels stadium Carmax Park will be covered in 170 solar panels, via the Richmonder.

the dive:

A three-judge Federal Appeals court panel has overruled a 2024 ruling by a circuit judge that Richmond Police officers “selectively targeted Black drivers when making traffic stops”, according to RTD.

The 2024 ruling cited data from 2020 that showed 77% of drivers stopped by Richmond Police were Black.

The circuit ruling also threw out an illegal gun possession charge for Keith Rodney Moore who was stopped for having a faulty tag in December of 2020.

Powell writes:

The traffic stop data referenced in the case was collected under Edwards’ predecessor, former Richmond Police Chief Gerald Smith. The stop data covered a six-month stretch of 2020, and the disparity in traffic stops has leveled out slightly in the years following Moore’s arrest.
