August 8, 2022 - Election Results, South Broad Redevelopment, and more.

GENERAL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Weston Wamp won the August county mayoral election and will be sworn in on September 1st. Election turnout was 21%. You can view the full results here.
  • The city and county have announced a joint plan to support a new Lookouts Stadium at the U.S. Pipe site as part of the efforts to revitalize the South Broad district. You can read about the plan here.. You can listen to my in-depth interview about the project on Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. The city council is voting to approve the project on August 9th. This is the final approval required.
  • The city has released a Roadmap to End Gun Violence in Chattanooga, which can be found here.

AUGST 2 CITY COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

  • On August 2 the city council:
    • recognized community outreach being done by the Chattanooga chapters of the National Black Police Association and International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters. – voted to create a new Office of Family Empowerment Advisory Board (second reading).

AUGUST 9 CITY COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

  • On August 9 the city council will:
    • vote to create a new Office of Family Empowerment Advisory Board (second reading).
    • vote on a number of rezoning cases (first reading).
    • vote on minor amendments the city ordinance with regards to the Police Advisory and Review Committee (first reading).
  • vote to confirm the appointment of Melinda Hickey to the Police Advisory and Review Committee.
    • vote to approve the South Broad District Plan (including a new sports authority board and TIF for the construction of a new stadium).
    • vote to confirm the appointment of Todd Morgan to the Historic Zoning Commission.
    • vote to accept a multi use path from JA Fielden Co., Inc. as city property for the Alton Park Connector.

AUGUST 16 CITY COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

  • On August 16 the city council will:
    • vote on a number of rezoning cases (second reading).
    • vote on minor amendments the city ordinance with regards to the Police Advisory and Review Committee (second reading).
    • vote to confirm the appointment of Cody Harvey to the Head Start Governing Board.
    • vote to confirm the appointment of Anna Taylor to the Library Board of directors.
