August 22, 2022 - Workforce Development, Board and Commission Appointments, and More
GENERAL HIGHLIGHTS
- Jermaine Freeman, Senior Adviser to Mayor Kelly for Economic Development, gave a presentation to the Economic Development Committee on August 16 regarding the Office of Workforce Development. You can watch the whole presentation here.
- The city has announced a new Director of Workforce Development Strategy, Mr. Quentin Lawrence, previously VP of Economic Development at Hope for the Inner City.
- The city has announced its intent to proceed with the Westside Evolves plan to renovate and expand the Westside public housing development. A conceptual master plan was written for this site in 2021 and will be going before the planning commission as the first step for adoption on September 12. You can find out more here.
- The city is planning a full update to the zoning code. The process will include several public meetings over the coming months. You can stay up to date with this process by signing up for email updates on their new Zoning Code Update website.
- The city is planning to update the Form Based Code zoning area that covers downtown. They will be holding public meetings to discuss these changes on August 22. Learn more here.
AUGST 16 CITY COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

- On August 16 the city council:
- voted on a number of rezoning cases (second reading).
- approved a number of minor amendments to the zoning and subdivision code (second reading).
- approved a minor amendments the city ordinance with regards to the Police Advisory and Review Committee (second reading).
- voted on a number of deferred zoning cases (first reading).
- voted to confirm the appointment of Cody Harvey to the Head Start Governing Board.
- voted to defer the appointment of Anna Taylor to the Library Board of Directors for one week.
- voted to release 2 Requests for Proposals seeking consultants and operation service providers for a new Low Barrier Emergency Homeless Shelter.
- a number of citizens addressed the council, many of them speaking on the refugees and immigrants who have been brought to the city. You can listen to the full public comments here.
AUGUST 23 CITY COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

- On August 23 the city council will:
- hold a public hearing on the East Brainerd Area 11 Plan. This plan was created by the RPA the inform future zoning cases and land use plans in the East Brainerd area. You can view the plan here.
- vote on a number of rezoning cases (first and second readingsF).
- vote on a minor amendment to the zoning code (first reading).
- vote to close and abandon several sections of unused right of way (first reading).
- vote to confirm the appointment of Ann Taylor to the Library Board of Directors.
- vote to confirm the appointment of Dr. Ernest Reid, Joyce Jackson, and Tccora Johnson Petersen to the Head Start Governing Board.
- vote to confirm the appointment of Sherelle Reid, Dr. Lar’mara Henderson, Meghan Creecy, Wynona McClendon, and Sharon Smith-Hensley to the newly created Office of Family Empowerment Board.
- vote to adopt the East Brainerd Area 11 Plan.
AUGUST 30 CITY COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

- On August 30 the city council will:
- vote on a number of rezoning cases (second reading).
- vote on a minor amendment to the zoning code (second reading).
- vote to close and abandon several sections of unused right of way (second reading).
- vote to amend the ordinance controlling to the Downtown Central Business Improvement District (first reading).
- vote to confirm the appointment of Jim Williamson, David Hudson, Tenesha Irvin, Sarah Brogdon, and Thomas Palmer to the Form-Based Code Committee.
- vote to confirm the appointment of Charles Young, Ronald Pendergrass, and James Walker to the Board of Electrical Examiners.
- vote to confirm the appointment of Brenda Jean Adamson, Matt Lyle, Nathan Bird (for transparency, that’s me), and Vyomesh Desai to the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission.
- vote to confirm the appointment of John Tucker, Shea Cofer, and Sandra Koss to the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Board.
