grants, PyPI changes, & negative-yet-kind code review
Hi, newsletter subscribers! Thanks for being interested in Changeset Consulting and my open source project management work. I'd like to share a few opportunities you might like to take:
- The Mozilla Open Source Support grants have opened two new funding tracks, Mission Partners and Secure Open Source.
"The Mission Partners track is open to any open source/free software project which is undertaking an activity which significantly furthers Mozilla's mission.... The minimum award for the Mission Partners track is $10,000, and the maximum is $250,000."
Mozilla is accepting Mission Partners applications on an ongoing basis. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/MOSS/Mission_Partners .
"The Secure Open Source ('SOS') track of MOSS supports security audits for open source software projects, and remedial work to rectify the problems found.... [The SOS track] has been allocated $500,000 in initial funding..."
Mozilla is currently accepting suggestions for SOS candidate projects. See https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2016/06/09/help-make-open-source-secure/ and https://wiki.mozilla.org/MOSS/Secure_Open_Source .
If you're interested in applying for a MOSS grant for your project, Changeset can help; let me know by replying.
- The Python Package Index https://pypi.python.org/pypi is due for replacement, so the Python community is working on getting Warehouse ready (demo site: https://pypi.io/ ) and planning for the launch. I've been sorting Warehouse bugs and working on project plans as a group of us prepare to apply for a grant from the Python Software Foundation, to sustain our work and speed the launch.
At launch, Warehouse won't be at feature parity with the old site. So now's a good time to give it a try and see if there's anything that's a showstopper of a feature gap, so we can make sure to address it before launch. File bugs at: https://github.com/pypa/warehouse/issues/

I've been giving talks on HTTP's hidden features, different models of maintainership, and finding and addressing barriers to entry in open source. https://www.harihareswara.net/talks.html

I blogged about Zulip, a client of mine, and dissected an example of negative yet kind feedback from its maintainer. https://www.harihareswara.net/sumana/2016/05/17/0
