Good morning, Columbus.
It's 28° right now but climbing to 41° under cloudy skies with light rain expected. 39% chance of precipitation, so tuck an umbrella somewhere accessible.
Winter coat weather at sunrise, lighter layers by afternoon. Watch for slick spots if the rain decides to show up.
📍 Driver flees after high-speed crash injures two passengers
Someone barreled down West Mound Street at 2:30 a.m., rolled their Ford Edge, snapped a pole holding a massive sign, and then bolted on foot. Two passengers were taken to the hospital. The driver is gone.
At 2:30 a.m. on West Mound Street, someone decided physics was optional. Early Sunday morning, a 2009 Ford Edge was moving westbound on West Mound Street near Harrison Pike at what Columbus police describe as "a high rate of speed."
The driver lost control. The Edge rolled, clipped a pole holding up a massive sign, and brought the whole thing down on the passenger side.
The Ford kept rolling before coming to rest in a parking lot at 1554 W. Mound St. A front-seat passenger was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
A rear-seat passenger arrived in stable condition. The driver fled on foot and remains at large.
Columbus police's Accident Investigation Unit is working the case. NBC4 reports investigators are seeking information about the vehicle and the driver. If you have information, call 614-645-4767 or tip Crime Stoppers anonymously at 614-461-8477.
This stretch of West Mound has seen this movie before — wide open road, commercial lots, drivers who think 60 feels like 40. Speed limits are suggestions until your SUV goes airborne at 2:30 a.m.
The area has been flagged in past traffic studies for excessive speeds during overnight hours when commercial traffic thins out and visibility improves. The combination of minimal lighting, wide lanes, and sparse late-night enforcement creates conditions where drivers routinely exceed posted limits by 20 mph or more.

Scoreboard
The Blue Jackets grab a point in overtime, the Crew settle for a road draw.
Columbus Blue Jackets | L, 3-4 OT | The Blue Jackets pushed the Islanders to overtime at Nationwide Arena but couldn't close it out. New York scored in the extra frame to take the win.
The overtime loss gets them one point in the standings, but they'll need to start banking regulation wins if they want to climb the Metropolitan Division ladder.
Columbus Crew | T, 2-2 | The Crew fought a rebuilding Sporting Kansas City to a 2-2 draw on the road. Scoring two goals on the road? Great. Giving up two and missing a PK? Less great. Figure out the back line before you come home.

📜 On This Day
On this day in 1803, Ohio's first General Assembly convened in Chillicothe, officially launching the 17th state. Except it wasn't exactly official: Congress forgot to formally ratify Ohio's admission until 1953.
For 150 years, Ohio operated on what was essentially a handshake agreement with the federal government. No one noticed. No one cared.
Ohio kept collecting taxes, electing representatives, and sending people to Congress anyway. When the oversight was finally discovered mid-20th century, Congress passed a resolution officially recognizing March 1, 1803 as Ohio's statehood date to avoid the paperwork nightmare of explaining a century and a half of technically unauthorized governance.
Bureaucracy: not even once.
Rain's in the forecast, but nothing a good umbrella can't handle. Get after it, Columbus.
See you Monday.
Before coffee. Before the chaos.
