The June 2025 Cab Post
Adresse change, a magical skateboard and a big iPod
Recap’
Hello everyone, I hope you’re doing well! As of writing this, I'm in the middle of moving preparations. I'm moving in with my partner into a new neighborhood and a very old building, near Mount Royal. It's going to be quite the change from my very busy/loud/”interesting” neighborhood! After thirteen years at this address and two years of eviction-anxiety, I'm experiencing some Big Emotions (™) right now. It's no secret that housing issues fascinate me and one day, I might turn my thoughts and opinions into a comic. But for now: boxes.
While we’re on the moving topic, I need to share some thoughts about the status of the Cab Post. After several months of deliberation and procrastination, I decided to migrate platforms from Substack to Beehiv. Contrary to Substack, Beehiv offers no way to keep one unified mailing list for multiple “publications”. This means that if I use the same list for both the English and French newsletter, everyone will get both in their inbox, all the time, with no way to opt-out of any one of them. So my options right now are to stay on Substack or stop publishing the English version newsletter altogether. To be frank, I don’t really publish much of anything in English on the web anymore, and this might be the final nail in the coffin. I’m not happy about it but I simply cannot think of any solution right now. We’ll see.
Meanwhile, I'm still inking Pupilles, the sci-fi comic book project I'm working on with Gautier Langevin and Jeik Dion, at a rate of one page per day. I'm not very diligent with promotion and I have a big backlog of stuff to post but I promise I'll put a couple of nice panels online eventually. In the meantime, here's a little glimpse into the world of Pupilles. We also have an Instagram!
Confession time: I was always too wimpy to skateboard, even though I was fascinated by the skate culture. My girlfriend got back into it last year and I get to live my best skatepark poser life. When she mentioned wanting to change boards, I offered to design and paint one for her. We worked on a design, I checked out tutorials, and took a leap of faith using spray paint and Poscas. It was FUN! Each step was more satisfying than the last. If you want to get out of a creative block, I have one tip for you: make a gift. It's easier to get your head out of your ass when you're working for someone you care about, and it brings a sense of pride that's pretty hard to beat. All stages of creation, from the first sketch to the final psychedelic-space skateboard are on Patreon!
Announcements
As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I'm having a moving sale to try and offload all of the books I keep bringing back home after festivals or events. Get 13% off any purchase in my online store. It's even possible to get a copy of Hiver Nucléaire or Utown signed and have a personalized dedication! Use the code MOVINGCAB at checkout. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
This newsletter is and will ALWAYS be free. If you like what I do, I suggest visiting my online shop or hunting down my books at your favorite bookstore or library. I also share my illustrations, tips and tooks, writings and reflexions on Patreon, using a monthly “pay what you want” method. Any kind of support is appreciated!
Cool stuff
After a bit of fiddling around, I managed to load my entire MP3 library onto the new/old iPod Classic my partner gave me for my birthday (it seems like we're gifting each other items that were super rad in 2003). My music collection is very modest, with about 330 albums purchased over a period of 25 years, but I do care about it. There's no logic, no common thread of genre or atmosphere in this collection of files, except that it's the music I like. And now I can take it anywhere!
Speaking of music.
Radio DDR from Sharp Pins is a lo-fi guitar-pop album that makes you want to wear bell-bottom pants and go have picnics on the grass, with grass.Very spacy, very palatable.
On the other hand, Philadelphia band Grocer gives us Bless Me, a mixed bag of genre and intensity. There are hints of The Breeders, Sonic Youth, Pixies and Pavement in the sauce. It's chaotic in parts but I can't wait to see what they do in the future!
Cool artist: Erika Lee Sears paints amazing oranges (amongst other things).
Wisdom of the month (mostly to motivate me):
“There is no “right time”. There is only now, plus courage.”
