I'll start this week by highlighting the ESA's Postdoctoral Excellence Award in Plant Population Ecology. The award, sponsored by AoB PLANTS has a deadline. The webpage says June 1, but a tweet from the PPE section of the ESA says the deadline has been extended to June 15.
For my weekend off, I was introduced to Argyrocytisus battandieri, Moroccan broom. I don't remember seeing it before, nor smelling it. It has a gorgeous light pineapple scent. If you see one in a botanic garden when it's flowering, then it's definitely worth close inspection.

The genetic and epigenetic landscape of the Arabidopsis centromeres
Centromeres attach chromosomes to spindle microtubules during cell division and, despite this conserved role, show paradoxically rapid evolution and are typified by complex repeats. Naish et al. used ultra-long-read sequencing to generate the Col-CEN Arabidopsis thaliana genome assembly that resolves all five centromeres.
Xu et al. profiled the effector repertoire secreted by Phytophthora sojae into the soybean (Glycine max) apoplast during infection using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. A secreted aldose 1-epimerase (AEP1) was shown to induce cell death in Nicotiana benthamiana, as did the other two aldose 1-epimerases from different Phytophthora species.
Auxin fluxes through plasmodesmata - Band
Studies have shown that plasmodesmatal auxin diffusion affects developmental processes, including phototropism, lateral root emergence and leaf hyponasty. This short Tansley insight review describes how these studies have contributed to our understanding of auxin dynamics and discusses potential future directions in this area.
Kehelpannala et al. leveraged a robust pipeline that they previously established to extract and analyze lipid profiles of different tissues and developmental stages from the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. They analyzed seven tissues at several different developmental stages and identified more than 200 lipids from each tissue analyzed. The data were used to create a web-accessible in silico lipid map that has been integrated into an electronic Fluorescent Pictograph (eFP) browser.
The latitudinal taxonomy gradient
Emerging large-scale datasets coupled with statistical advances have provided new insights into the processes that generate the latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG). But many of these studies run into an old, if often underappreciated, problem: The interpretation of the data critically depends on the consistent application of criteria to define what constitutes a species. This is particularly pernicious for the LDG because good species have been easier to recognize in temperate than in tropical regions. Freeman and Pennell provide evidence that this latitudinal taxonomy gradient exists, discuss how this potentially impacts inferences about latitudinal variation in ecoevolutionary processes such as population differentiation and speciation, and provide a roadmap for how to mitigate taxonomic biases in the study of biodiversity patterns.
Building Back More Equitable STEM Education: Teach Science by Engaging Students in Doing Science
Recent efforts have demonstrated that Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) can be an effective approach for making STEM research accessible for all. Elgin et al. provide here an example framework (The âDo Science Frameworkâ) for making STEM training more effective and inclusive using CUREs. While CUREs do not inherently address equity, there can be no equity in STEM education without equal access to research participation, and progress toward this goal can be achieved using CUREs.

Weston Family Conservation Science Fellowship
The objective of this project is to measure the viability of some of Canadaâs most at-risk plant populations in the Carolinian Forest region. They will use these data to link population growth rates with microhabitat conditions, threats and habitat suitability.
