Musings and Meanderings
Someone tried to romance phish me after sending out the last newsletter - I saw a familiar looking email thought it was someone I knew so I replied instead of double checking. Then the reply asked to communicate on Whatsapp and I did not hesitate to provide my telephone number as I was so confident I knew who it was. At the time I was a little stressed from the waiting and repairs and I was not as cautious as I should have been. Eventually a small red flag was raised in my head and I thought to ask a few more specific questions in an attempt to confirm the identity of this person. They kept coming back with, "Had we met here or there" but never where I knew we did meet (online at one of the many book artists groups that I had joined). Then the "romancing" started on WhatsApp with them saying they hoped I would forgive them for not having been in touch so long. No one I knew spoke like that except from what I had seen on romance scam documentaries and videos. I blocked them and immediately a similar message came from another phone number came through almost immediately about not understanding why I had blocked them and hoped that our time apart had not reduced the affection between us. Seriously?!?
I labeled any emails from that address as spam so that my email provider could start on getting that sorted out (although I am not sure they can do anything). Then in the spam folder I blocked that sender address. When I blocked the phisher a 2nd time in Whatsapp they decided they had already spent too much time on me and went on to pursue other victims. I then threw myself into looking up how to get rid of my info online and did what was suggested. I typed my name in a browser and the 1st thing that came up on me had so much information on me I was SHOCKED! I had that website remove my information but I am sure there is lots more out there. I understand that folks are trying to stop Google from collecting any of their data but I had google start monitoring my email addresses. I eventually got a paid app to worked on this because I was already spending too much time on this. Life is too short. The really sad thing is that these romance scammers are actually trafficked into this line of "work" when they apply for what they think are legitimate jobs in countries where legal penalties for online fraud may be less severe. They are held against their will in what I called "scam camps" - multi-story buildings with better security that some prisons. Think Ghana, Nigeria, Cambodia, etc.
Then after my nerves started to settle down into a nice sine wave my laptop started acting abnormally. It would freeze after getting out of my browser with a weird green arrow icon in the taskbar (bottom of screen) that I did not recognize. It also would not power off which disturbed me a little. ++ Some operating system techno speak after this - look for next set of ++ to skip to. Once I was able to power off the laptop I ran a deep scan using 2 different apps offline and forced some windows update rollbacks (yes, uninstalled latest windows updates). I also made sure to turn off certain extensions (a whole other story here) to ensure a smooth exit out of chrome and changed power settings to ensure being able to power off my laptop. I originally wanted to keep the laptop lid down so that I could work on my big monitor. Convenience over safety. Ughhh! Too much to think about but then I had been a little lax with my laptop lately. And amazingly enough I had to offload some files on to my external backup drive so that I could make room on my laptop because the updates could not happen due to a lack of space. ++ And when that happens sometimes you need to step away and have some boba milk tea before you to cool down from the hot flashes before unraveling from sheer frustration. The laptop is working fine, for now. I just need to leave little notes for myself in the folders to remind myself where I moved files to - the external hard drive.
Met with Yol A. for a walk on the Manhattan Beach strand and lunch. It was sunny and humid but the breeze definitely helped. The humidity was unusual due to the remnants of several storms from the south. We also met with some random people after asking what they were reading (no privacy when your reading nook is right on the strand) - found out their grandmother was a village catalog bride who came over after 1906 San Francisco fires happened - since all the records burned down people were able to reinvented themselves. Lunch was delectable along with a show & tell (trips and books made) - we were lucky it was during the week so the restaurant wasn't too busy. If lunch was delicious, ice cream was even better - I had to to try the goat cheese marionberry habañero - the sweet tart marionberry came in first then the heat from the habañero with the goat cheese kicking in a bit strongly at the end. Ended up with the Freckle mint chocolate chip - I believe it may be better than McConnell's which we usually stop for in Santa Barbara for a break in driving when traveling to the Central Coast of California. Also met up with another friend whom I had not seen in 15 years - his kid is now in college and we parted promising to stay in touch - breakfast in October with both our significant others (hopefully - see house repair update below)!
Now for the updates on the house - because we had to change contractors (the original one went out of business) there have been lots of delays since we now had to pick out flooring again as the new contractor dealt with another flooring company, ditto with the kitchen cabinets. Eventually we will need to do the cabinets upstairs and the bannister since they no longer match but that will be another story for the future. Our insurance adjuster also had to take some time off and was not going to be back until Christmas and luckily she made good notes but the new adjuster is a little tough to work with. The walls have been patched, textured and painted (dry wall dust everywhere). They dropped off the flooring and we ordered the stove and microwave (luckily I looked for quick delivery and available for viewing at location) and they are supposed to be starting the install of the cabinets on September 25th (the day this newsletter goes out - good news - they are almost done with the kitchen - woo hoo!). Once those are done the new stove and microwave will be installed. They were both over 26 years old and starting to show quite a bit of wear and tear - did not notice until they pulled it out of the kitchen and placed it my living room. Nothing like a change in location to get a new perspective. The purchase of the stove and microwave will be out of pocket as they were not affected by the flooding. We are hoping that our countertops will fit the tops of the new cabinets otherwise there will be more waiting happening. As of September 21st we have been 2 months without a kitchen. Give me strength! Sigh!
See you in October!
