Musings and Meanderings

I am back from my trips and now traversing down internet rabbit holes and bringing you news and information about papery and bookish goodness. I cannot believe how many mandalas and envelopes to store them in I folded incentivized by the many people I had lovely visits with.

We took a trip up north to San Jose, CA, to meet up with my brother and his significant other and met up with Kit Davey (full of beautiful light studio tour up a spiral staircase, a little free art library and a stick library for dogs!) and Jen Kwan (amazing and insightful conversations over coffee and keeping an eye on the pigeons). This trip was a smorgasbord of diverse cuisines, was blown away by a small batch coffee roaster (you got to pick whether you wanted a light, medium or dark roast for your capuccino and they had their own high tech small batch coffee roaster where you can program in all the coffee profiles), an ice cream company that played off Asian desserts, a first experience with a ghost kitchen. We had adventures (among which was a rail bike tour - unfortunately they are being forced to close by Dec 1 - asked and got a bent & rusty 100-year railroad spike to remember them by) and hikes in Monterey, Carmel and the Big Sur area north of McWay Falls (Highway 1 was closed further south at the time of our trip). We continued down to the Pismo Beach area but stopping in the Ragged Point area (going as far north on Highway 1 as possible on this leg) to check out the amazing views through the Portal of Big Sur. We drove back to the Los Angeles area the day before my brother and his SO were due to fly back to Houston after enjoying our time in the Pismo Beach area. If you are in the San Jose area, they do have the empty smaller burlap and jute coffee bags for the asking - head to Coffee & Water Lab on Saratoga Avenue. I folded a mandala and corresponding envelope every night we were there to give away to everyone I visited.

Towards the end of September I had the opportunity to attend the Oceanside Zine & Print Fair where I met up with Laurie M., Maria R and Denise S. I had last seen these 3 lovely and talented ladies back in February and it was a lovely way to catch up and have lunch. And then it was zines and graphic novels galore. There was a young man there whose zine "How to make a scrubbie" was accompanied by a scrubbie made by his mom! He is also a talented graphic novelist and I could not help myself and had to get all 3 of his graphic novels. Zines are an amazing art form made by artists of all ages and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with everyone.

Five (5) days later we flew to the Big Island of Hawai'i to start our house-sitting adventure. We normally fly directly to the Big Island but this time we flew to Honolulu in order to fly on a Boeing 787 airplane for the 1st time. It was a very enjoyable flight - the windows no longer have window shades and you controlled the opaqueness with a button below the bottom of the window - the ceiling of the plane changed colors and appeared to have constellations of stars. And since it was Hawaiian Airlines you were still fed during the in-flight meal service - no need to bring a meal on board or purchase a meal. Tangent memory: I miss when we used to bring Pollo Campero fried chicken onto the plane when we left Guatemala to head back to Los Angeles - just about everyone on the plane did it and beer was brought on board as well. However when we last visited in 2019 the Pollo Campero restaurant in the airport was no longer there. We were most excited when they opened a branch close by but unfortunately it was just not the same. Sigh! On top of catching up with many old friends at our favorite coffee spot and restaurants (we would keep running into the same people as we kept meeting friends and was told, "You guys sure know a lot of people!" LOL!), we made new ones waiting in line at our favorite bakery and restaurants. Our cheeks hurt from laughing and I loved the sharing of aloha and "talking story". I also had the opportunity to take a day trip to the island of O'ahu to met an artist who had been introduced to my newsletter and calendar by Shawn S. at FOBA. Allison R. picked me up at the airport and we had a marvelous time going on a tour of the Manoa Heritage Center (such a special place - I felt my most tranquil there), an exhibit at DAC (Downtown Art Center) Honolulu and lunch at her studio (where I could see so many vignettes that her art made up). By the time I got back to Kona airport I was starving and luckily the restaurant where we had a later reservation was able to fit us in earlier even though it was a Friday night. Thank you, Allison for a lovely day and my book necklace made up of indigo pages. I felt very regal in it and was stopped many times with people asking me about the necklace. The house sitting was uneventful except for a flat tire and one of the kitties needing to go to the vet.

Once our house sittee returned Bill went back home to the mainland and I continued on to Kauai and spent about 5 days with Laurie M. We had been trying for a few years to meet up in Kauai and things fell into place this year. I was introduced to the magical lanai where I enjoyed the chill sounds of wind through the coconut and manila palms, birds chirping, the ocean in the distance interspersed with siren (but way less than in LA) and rain along with visits from unseen barking geckos and very visible Madagascar day lizards and in between all of that chats, food and origami lessons. Bonus adventure: I love looking for rainbow eucalyptus stands on the Big Island and was disappointed when we were not able to find one that had been mentioned to us while at an artists cooperative. Then as we are driving around on our Kauai adventures I see a whole row of glorious rainbow eucalyptus. I take a walk and as I get to the 1st tree it starts to rain lightly. I start taking pictures and it starts to pour. I start to walk back and it stops. Back I go and had a marvelous time taking pictures of these colorful trees. 4 stands of rainbow eucalytus that I know of now. Blissful sigh!

Another adventure randomly showed up on one of my feeds and off we went on a quick trip to ride Clydesdales in Cambria and scratch behind the ears of thoroughly adorable mini burros. These Clydesdale were t-a-l-l - shoulders above our heads! Bill and I are short and definitely needed the 3-step ladder to help us mount. The halfway point had ocean views with welcome breezes for both the horse and us and afforded a photo opportunity. Always happy to visit the Central Coast of California again.

Whether your upcoming week is quiet and reflective or having boisterous family time I hope you have the time and space you want.
