Musings and Meanderings

I had crowdfunded Peter Dahmen’s new book, Pop Up Sculptures, through Kickstarter last year in early September and received it last week along with a set of pop up cards. Been having too much fun opening and closing the book (gently, gently, don't crack the spine) and cards and trying not to look too closely at how it was done. I did not want to dive down another rabbit hole of interesting things to do or learn. I will leave the popups to other people. If you'd like to check out this book and cards I believe Poposition Press may still have some. Here is a short video about the book (note - it is a short on YouTube so it will loop).

Made a birthday card for Bill using a new hydrangea tessellation taught by Mariela of OrigamiManiacs on YouTube. Once I started making them I couldn't stop. Luckily I learned this structure 3 days before his birthday and so had lots to choose from when I made his card. These hydrangea origami structures ended up being some of the pages in the flag book that I combined with the sentiment & memory (of our favorite trips and how they came about) pages.

Was happy that I learned so much and was blown away in the ZXB (Zhen Xian Bao) Series 2 workshop, Sizing, taught by Susan Share and Paula Krieg. This workshop provided such an enlightening & ingenious way to size the boxes in your ZXB and this knowledge was priceless to me. I cannot say enough good things about these 2 lovely, generous and warm human beings - they made me think, they made me chuckle, they had me delighted (like when you found out dark chocolate was good for you), they had me vibing happily with math concepts, they made me ponder the universe of what was and what can be. When we were done I was saddened that it had finished but was gratified that I had my samples to remind me of what I will need to do in the future. If you see me with a half smile smile and a distant look in my eyes I just might be thinking about this incredible class and how things fit. Or what to have for my next meal!

I am looking forward to attending a couple of workshops before we see the end of May: No-Glue Slipcase Accordion Book with Shawn Sheehy and Memories Book Container with Anna Yevtukh - the instructor will be zooming from the UK, the workshop was organized by a book artists guild, CBBAG, from Toronto, Canada, with me zooming at 7:30am from California will be ... challenging (soooo not a morning person) but technology is wonderful and connecting - an amazing confluence, over 8 time zones, when it works!

So I promised a list of cities and towns we either stopped at or stayed in as we drove up to and back from Newport, Oregon, for NPBAF (Newport Paper and Book Arts Festival) in April 2025. The ones with an "!" are the ones where we lodged.

!Tehachapi, CA - visited overnight with friends that I have known since 1988 - they had to approve of my Bill in order for us to keep dating when we first started going out
Brentwood, CA - had dinner with another old friend - we met in line while waiting to register for French class at junior college in 1981
!Davis, CA - spent the night to break up the trip - definitely a college town with reminders that it used to be an old railroad town with lots of good coffee and boba milk tea places
Redding, CA - gas and pit stop but was intrigued by the fried chicken they offered that had been brined in pickle juice (noticed it would a great place to headquarter if exploring the more north eastern parts of CA and its volcanic origins and geological structures)
!Medford, OR and surrounding areas - wanted to do Crater Lake rim drive but it was still closed for the season - instead enjoyed a hike at Upper Table Rock trail and enjoyed lots of wildflowers - everywhere were parades of white cherry blossom skittering across roads and parking lots in mesmerizing swirls and lines despite the cherry trees still full with blossoms - admired a snow capped Mt. McLoughlin almost as perfect as Mt. Fuji (except for that one cinder zone that threw of the symmetry) - also started dropping off books at a Little Free Library (LFL) by a park - BTW they have a Daiso (Japanese dollar store) here and experienced reverse sticker shock for the price of gas, a $1 or more less in OR than in CA, and some still pump gas for you
Eugene, OR - stopped at a Winco (employee owned - only cash and debit cards, please) to pick up coffee and breakfast stuff for our longer stay at Newport - 2nd drop off for books at an LFL before cutting west towards the coast
Toledo, OR - stopped by to say hello to one of my favorite teachers whom I had not seen since 2019, Margo Klass, who being the generous and kind soul that she is insisted that I talk about my newsletter - the long travel day made me forget what was in the newsletter and Margo had to prompt me - thank you, Margo, you sweetheart! - also met up with some FOBA board members past and present who were very excited about the call for workshops for 2026 - found out that one of the attendees, Jill T. was very interested in going to Bind25 in Auckland, NZ, in September but needed more information about their workshops - luckily I was able to get in touch with the organizer to get the info and passed it along - yay!
!Newport, OR - attend Pietro Accardi's "Articulated Binding" (a brilliant evolution from making a telephone book with a cover that would last in Turin) workshop in a classroom that was mostly windows with the most long past the horizon scenic ocean views - the notebook I made felt very satisfying in my hands the grooves giving my fingers purchase - had front row seats to sea lion grumblings & complaints by the marina where we stayed and I suspect I heard a bald eagle but did not see it - had a glorious visit with Cheri A. - lots of oohing and aahing in her studio - she had separate areas depending on what art she was creating - she fascinated me with her creations from bull kelp and I learned a new word - holdfast (anchors the kelp to the sea floor, the blades and other parts of the kelp plant are responsible for absorbing nutrients from the water) - also learned about an efficient way to organize your scraps for collaging by color by using a traveler's or Midori notebook, easy in and out from under the elastic
Lincoln City, OR - had a craving for boba milk tea and found a food truck hub here that had it - also indulged in a Vietnamese sandwich - most yummy! Spontaneously stopped by Moss Creek Pottery and picked up an unusual mug after having decided between 6 mugs - met a 93 old potter who was still throwing almost every day from Monmouth, OR - Elinor Maroney. Hope to visit her next year if I go to FOBA
Depoe Bay, OR - exquisite views from the road as we drove back from Lincoln City and wanted to find those views again the next day - found the Whale Cove Inn and asked if we could admire the view from their restaurant balcony - never would have seen that bit of coast from the road - stunning!
Trinidad, CA - stopped at the Lighthouse Grill - we always order and split the fully loaded savory mashed potato waffle all the way - I am getting hungry just thinking about it - if you are anywhere close to this little town stop for lunch then go visit the many trading stores and art galleries - have stayed here twice and would be happy to do so again
!Eureka, CA - met up with some NORBAGers (North Redwoods Book Arts Guild) to teach a quick mandala and self closing envelope. Provided attendees with step by step diagrams for both (silly me - I did not fold the correct sample mandala to show) after we got back. A delicious potluck dinner followed - lots of wonderful chats as we ebbed and flowed through them and we even ended up trying to figure out our stripper names - take the name of your 1st pet and add it to the street name of your 1st house (send me yours) - it was a hoot - plus gushing about Randi Parkhurst (see Bits and Bobs section in April 2025 newsletter)
Santa Rosa, CA - picked up more breakfast stuff, a boba milk tea and a Vietnamese sandwich (beginning to see a trend here ...)
Passed through Bodega, CA and saw the church and school in "The Birds" movie from the road on the way to ...
!Bodega Bay, CA - quiet little town with amazing restaurants for seafood and wood fired pizzas, impressive views and trails - visited the Children's Bell Tower built in honor of Nicholas Green who was killed by highway robbers in Italy in 1994 and shone a spotlight on organ donation - on the way we passed what I call a wind chime tree, 2 actually, where chimes have been hung up made from everything you can think of, rocks, glass, abalone shells, pictures, etc., a part of this memorial - as you drive through Bodega Bay you are met with many, many, glorious purple and periwinkle conical spikes of pride-of-madeira flowers along the side of the road - as beautiful and vibrant as they are it is considered an invasive species
Sonoma, CA - visited the Sonoma Valley museum to check out Book Becoming Art exhibit and bought some body butter from the museum gift store (I adore museum gift stores, don't you?) that combined sandalwood, cardamom and violet for a lovely light scent - enjoyed being in the quieter parts of Sonoma County - house numbers made out of horse shoes, bouquets of flowers available on the honor system, contented cows grazing with their best friends and sometimes sharing their pastures with horses, sheep, goats and alpacas, a cow crossing that delighted me as I suspected that they were heading for their evening milking - it was a nice change being away from the hurried & frantic pace of big cities
Penngrove, CA - dropped off more books at a LFL - I hesitated for a moment as it was open to the elements - there was a roof but no doors - hope they close it up at night or during inclement weather
San Anselmo, CA - visited my favorite bakery for cardamom knots as a snack for for the trip to see the Golden Gate bridge - needed the sustenance as it took over an hour to get to this bakery from Bodega Bay
Sausalito, CA - visited Battery Spencer which afforded you a view of the Golden Gate bridge looking south - the fencing built to keep you from dropping off the cliff was weighed down by the many locks that people in love had placed there in hopes that their love would be as unbreakable - a number of people climbed over these fences or through holes in them to get a more Instagrammable moment as I held my breath - unfortunately the Point Bonita lighthouse was not open while we were there
San Rafael, CA - visited the Marin County Civic Center to see the iron work gates that Dolores G's father had drawn up for Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW) in half scale (saw those amazing drawings in her house - we giggled when saying the measurements out loud, "6 and 19/32!" at her house) - the entire building was filled with signs, water fountains, telephone booths, door handles, exemplifying FLW's organic architecture - the building looking like a "Marin blue" spaceship had landed and decided to stay (when viewed from the side) or the remnants of a LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) structure (when viewed from above)
Inverness, CA - thought we would be able to drive through the Cypress Tree Tunnel on the way to the Point Reyes Lighthouse but the road to the marine radio station was not open. Went to the lighthouse where parking was difficult but managed to find a spot on the side of the road - the 0.4 mile walk, all uphill and fighting the wind, felt much longer - then we get to the lighthouse viewpoint and there were another 331 "wicked hard" steps going down to it - I noped out of that and bought a pretty postcard and magnet of the lighthouse instead - maybe next time
Vallejo, CA - read about an artisanal coffee roaster and wanted to pick up some coffee they created when Kamala Harris was running for VP with beans from India and Jamaica and another blend they recommended for espresso (got some cardamom bitters to try with these new blends)
San Jose, CA - picked up a favorite Indian dessert (takes me forever to finish it as a little bit goes a long way but thinking I can grate this over my flat white with a splash of the cardamom bitters), more coffee and a large burlap bag that had held beans from Guatemala from my favorite coffee place in the area
!Arroyo Grande/Pismo Beach, CA - we were supposed to stay 2 nights but it felt we had been gone so long that this portion of the trip was reduced to 1 night - had dinner at our favorite seafood place and dropped off the last book at a LFL - the 1st one was too small and had to quickly look on LFL Map for another that would fit - found a new coffee place on the way back to the hotel
Oxnard, CA - stopped at an out of the way produce stand (so out of the way we thought GPS had malfunctioned) and picked up the most delectable and juicy strawberries ever which were thoroughly enjoyed for the next week's worth of breakfasts.

So all in all - over 2,600 miles (4,100 km) through 2 states (CA and OR), stopped in 23 towns and stayed in 7 over 14 days - phew!

See you in June!
