- I'll keep this up until the April 2025 newsletter: Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 and older will need a state-issued REAL ID-compliant license or identification card, or another acceptable form of ID (such as a passport), to fly within the United States. If you don't have a REAL ID, you'll need to use another acceptable form of identification when flying within the U.S.

A blast from the past: Claire Van Vliet and Elizabeth Steiner announce that their book Woven and Interlocking Book Structures is now available free for all at the Internet Archive - published in 2002 and no longer in print, this book is a self-teaching manual with directions for making basic models of 16 book structures designed for Janus, Steiner, and Gefn Press publications - Claire suggests printing the pages of the digital version 2-sided and binding them in a 3-ring binder to function as a bench top manual - directions: Save this file to your computer; Open the file in Acrobat; Open the Print menu and print all 152 pages, double-sided on 8.5"x11” paper
I tend to carry a subset of my studio with me when I travel for a workshop and just got this, a Sizzix Making Tool (video explaining all what it does here), to save on carrying a paper trimmer, score board and envelope/box maker around with me. This will be tested at NPBAF!
If you happen to be in California here are some locations for wildflower viewing this year (even though the list is from last year) from mid-March through April - they did not mention Carrizo Plain National Monument in Santa Margarita, CA
A snack box that turns into a table
I am thoroughly enjoying my 3rd go around studying Zhen Xian Baos (Chinese Thread Books) under Susan Share and Paula Krieg - in the event some folks would like to fold dividers for their masu boxes - a regular divider or a diagonal divider
Musings and Meanderings
As mentioned in last month's newsletter we had just started on our soujourn in Pismo Beach and Santa Barbara areas. We found a number of trails to walk on in Pismo Beach and loved that they all had ocean views. The one just behind our hotel had swings, fire pits and stairs going down to the beach. I remembered that I used to go to a certain view point in Shell Beach (next town north of Pismo) to have a think when I attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 40 years ago. On the way back from a small hike I actually remembered the instructions I was given from dorm mate whose car I had borrowed. "Take the first exit for Shell Beach and then the first right. Follow it to the end and walk between some houses." Guess what? It was still there and it looked like you could now access that area from 2 paths. The view seemed to be the same but the uplifted ocean layers were less defined and bleached. The hotel also had a little free library and for a change I actually had books in the car to leave with the library. I noticed the trash receptacles were a little too close to the library and suggested that they be moved so that people did not have to contort themselves to reach for the books. A much better experience after they were moved - it felt more ... welcoming. While in Pismo I looked for espresso places that experimented with unusual flavors - I got to try a sage latte and a pistachio brulee one. On returning home (and I swear my phone is spying on me) I came across an article about what else can be added to your coffee to complement it. I now add orange bitters to my daily flat white. Most yummy!
When we drive along the coast of the Big Island the names of the towns are like a chant to accompany the views of the ocean between the peeks of jungle and overgrown signs and power poles. When we drive along the Central coast of California landmarks let me know where we are. The pink Madonna Inn as you drive past San Luis Obispo (SLO) or the mission as you drive through SLO to look for Turkish delight. The ocean glittering as you head south towards Shell and Pismo Beach. The rolling hills that I love so much after Santa Maria and looking for the mission bell markers spaced about a mile or so apart by the side of the freeway to signify "El Camino Real" - the Royal Way. Do we head to Lompoc to look for new murals? Or do we continue and see that the rest areas close to Gaviota/Refugio are still closed (it has been 3 years). If we go to Lompoc proceed to admire the red tail hawks and turkey buzzard spiralling in the achingly blue California sky. The giant Santa Claus that used to be in the Santa Barbara area and is now in the Oxnard/Ventura area (if you know the area it is on the frontage road on the 101 between the Rice and Del Norte exits). Though it looks like it there is a mission in Camarillo but it is the St. Mary Magdelene church visible from the freeway just before you start to see cars struggling to get up the Conejo (rabbit) Pass or impatiently waiting to pass the stragglers. The white Tivoli marble of the Getty Center lets you know if you need to plan a stop at your favorite bakery. You are about 35 minutes from home but it really all depends on the time of day and the traffic. The Mobil refinery alerts you to being 2 exits away from your off-ramp.
As soon as we got back I had to prep for 2 workshops: An Introduction to One-Piece Structural Packaging with Paul Jackson and Zhen Xian Bao (ZXB) Series 1 - Layered Boxes of Zhen Xian Bao with Paula Krieg and Susan Share. Paul's class is requiring a level of precision that is quite opposite of how I fold. There is some level of give and take in origami but for Paul's class there needs to be precision to have everything fold and tuck into place and evidently win competitions which I am sure I will not. The ZXB series 1 class -is a cracking refresher - nudging the muscle memory to wake up and get in gear. The inspiration I am getting from being in the class is pinging around in my head and I am thoroughly enjoying playing with all the box layers of the ZXB. So far masu (folded and glued), rectangular tray (folded and glued - there is a story I tell myself to help remember the order construction for the glued version), playing with a square tray (folded and trying to figure out how to glue) and remembering that I owed Susan some homework from her class, Folded Lidded Boxes, last November and 2 ways on how to make a twist box. I can't believe I forgot how much I enjoyed folding with rock paper (yes! made from rocks - send me your snail mail address and I'll send you a sample). I cannot believe we are coming up to our last session. Sigh! But Series 2 (scaling and sizing) and 3 (Reimagined - creating your own personal ZXB) are coming up later in the year - yay!
I remember having to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) just before Los Angeles county shutdown for covid to get my RealID back in March 2020. I was surprised to be notified recently that it was time to renew my license. Gosh! That flew by, didn't it? I was not looking forward to having to go to the DMV and I was delighted to find out that I could renew my driver's license online without having to do it in person. Great place to people watch but slightly soul sucking because of those seats - ugghhh - impossible to contort your body to settle into those seats! Hours out of of your day you will never get back even with a reservation as you W-I-L-L your number to show up on the black and white screens that everyone is scrutinizing. Really not the staff's fault that the bureaucracy exists. The appointment did go better than I expected and to that end when we were finally able to travel again I brought them cookies from the Big Island of Hawai'i.
Went through a small cleaning and consolidation binge in the 2nd bedroom (as you know it is officially my junk room) and threw out a lot of paper tubes and Amazon boxes. Should I have donated the paper tubes? I am recycling the Amazon boxes to hold items I intend to donate - one in master closet and another in the 2nd bedroom. Kept one really thick and really sturdy paper tube as a potential weapon in the bedroom. Could it be, though? You can now sit in one of my fake Wassily chairs (I really adore them for how they are formed) if you wanted to look at my Kallax 5x5 bookcase and display with the inversion table in the way. Update: no you can't as there is now the ream of 11" x 17" white cardstock paper purchased for Paul's class that fits nicely on the seat.
The cleaning coincided with a visit from Yol A. - a fellow classmate who loves taking as many Susan and Paula classes as I do. I shared what I had done before in 2022 and 2023 (incredulously organized in Daiso containers with handles). Thought we would have Japanese-style spaghetti (huge expatriate community and all that) and went to a dim sum lunch instead. The highlight was the walk by the lighthouse cliffs and what I call the whale watching center - gravelly gurgly beaches, dolphin superpod that darkened the water, many whale spouts (good for the people out there counting whales), and lots of dogs. We did met an English Cream golden retriever that I thought was a Maremma sheepdog so had to ask. We were too late in the day to keep a lookout for Nomad, the West African Sulcata tortoise that walks there every day. Heard an Osprey - a tilt rotor aircraft - but before spotting it thought it was a Coast Guard helicopter. It was a glorious walk!
Have not heard the owl since we got back from our trip but it had been raining steadily for a couple of weeks (owls gave up waterproof wings for silent flight) but we have a new visitor. A Coopers Hawk fledgling, I believe, testing his wings flying from tree to tree but still keening for food for the last 2 weeks. I hope they hang around although the family of crows in the park may be adverse to that. Another trip is coming up as we will drive to Newport, OR, for NPBAF - exploring places we have been to and re-visiting favorites.
See you in April!
