Musings and Meanderings

I have been going to more in person workshops in the last 3 months than I have in the last 3 years. It was glorious to be able to reconnect in person and to make new connections. I have been wonderfully surprised and grateful to find out that so many of my fellow attendees know about my newsletter. If you ever wondered about how I get my inspirations to write in this section, I have always taken nourishment from observing out a window whether it is a car, plane, bedroom, looking between fence posts to get a different perspective when going to workshops, having coffee/lunch with friends or having more adventures. I have an amazing number of sweet and wonderful memories in my mind that no pictures taken with a camera could rival. Well ... except maybe pictures from the James Webb Space Telescope. I have noticed that here are more crows than normal at the Palos Verdes Interpretive Center (PVIC) where we take walks but maybe they were just aggravated by the ravens that normally live there and were being most raucous about it. More dolphins were spotted in feeding circles with pelicans diving in to add to the excitement but we kept missing the grey whales. The wildflowers are starting to peek out in what I suspect will be a superbloom in the area around PVIC and elsewhere in California. Even the sides of the highway between Tucson and Phoenix were covered in yellow, orange, purple, pink and white wildflowers. Not surprising as Tucson got more than its usual share of rain. We drove under clouds heavily ominous with rain after passing the border between California and Arizona and even spotted virga - rain that does not reach the ground even though it was obviously raining from the bottom of the cloud.

We got up close, well not too close, with a Saguaro cactus that was over 4 Bills high and a bit - over 21 feet (6m) tall and made Bill look tiny. They can grow up to 40 feet (12m) tall! Did you know that Saguaro don't even start to bud and grow their "arms" until they are between 50 and 75 years old (thanks, Laura R.!). I remember reading about them in National Geographic as a kid and falling in love with them. Also fell in love with astronomy and had a crush on the King of Bhutan because of Nat Geo. We definitely stayed away from the Cholla/teddy bear (they only look fuzzy from a distance)/jumping cactus keeping a healthy distance between us and them. We were also lucky enough to spot a rare crested Saguaro but was not quick enough with the phone as I spotted it from the car going 75mph and thought, "What a strange looking Saguaro!". But the sunsets, the sunsets (not my picture but close) in Tucson are extra spectacular! I found a lookout, Babad Do'ag Scenic Overlook, on the way up to Mount Lemmon, and stood there in utter awe as we tried to capture the play of colors between the warm sunset and the cool hills. It was even better after the sun went below the hills. It looked as if Madame Pele decided to take a vacation and brought all the colors of erupting lava and splashed it across the sky. Gosh! If we ever move to Tucson that view might just have to be mandatory! Unfortunately I lost all my pictures - please see the next paragraph for the explanation. Bill visited the PIMA Air & Space Museum and chatted with a WWII veteran who is 100 years old while I was at Ed's workshop. Petroglyphs between 7,500 - 12,000 years old were also admired on this trip with necks craned so as to get the best shot and we left wondering what they were trying to record. Hmm ... we had the same thought with the petroglyphs in Hawai'i.

Still the one ever so small downside with in person workshop are the muscles you don't normally use can sometimes get a little tweaked. But this in turn led to me to discovering Stretch Zone where they assist you in correctly stretching and deepening said stretch without you hurting yourself. Did you know you have 3 sets of hamstrings? I certainly didn't until I booked my first complimentary stretching session and found out how not very flexible I had become. I am a little more flexible now but more importantly it feels like my energy levels are also coming up. Woo hoo!

Oh! One other thing - my phone stopped working - utterly and completely! It had a bad habit of overheating when taking pictures and I thought nothing of it until the night we got back from Temecula (visiting old friends we hadn't seen since before COVID) driving from Tucson. Tried to revive it with all suggestions from YouTube including putting it in the freezer for 20 minutes. Since I couldn't do much until the next day I thought it best to order a an unlocked phone (not tied to any service provider and so when you pop your old SIM into your new phone you are back up and running). If the old phone could be recovered I'd return the new one. If not I had a new phone ready to reconnect to the world. I found out very quickly after dropping off my phone at the repair center that it was, to borrow a turn of phrase, "dead in the water". They recommended another repair center that may be able to recover the phone/data who then told me after a 3 day wait that they would need to send it out to get the data recovered as the phone was no longer be operable. Luckily I was able to get the SIM before they sent out the phone so that I could now be reconnected with the Internet of Things when placed in my new phone. My no longer viable phone reached the data recovery center a few days ago. I will find out in a few more days if the data can be recovered. I really would love to have those sunset pictures and the picture I took of Hedi's hands during her workshop last October. And that giant board shear she uses as a letter opener and side buffet when there is company.

You would think that I would have setup automatic reminders or backups for my phone data to go to an external drive connected to my laptop or up to the cloud or both. I made the erroneous assumption that my phone would continue to work until I was ready to change it out for a newer model. It was an expensive lesson to learn but then that is why you have a secret bank account, isn't it? So I now carry a tiny micro-SD card that has the same storage capacity as my new phone and reader that easily connects to my phone and fits in my tiny purse. I need to create a tiny bag for it to keep it relatively dust free. Backups can done any time with that setup and once a week or month with the external drive connected to my laptop. Sigh!

So how did it feel not having a phone from a Monday night to Saturday evening? "And why so long?", you ask? The phone configuration I wanted - dual SIM (to facilitate international travel), 8GBs of memory, 256GBs of storage and unlocked (please see above) would take that long to come in even when purchased on Amazon. Strangely enough it was less expensive than the same model phone with one SIM and 128GBs of storage with everything else the same. Come to find out I was rather dependent on my old phone for the many alarms I had set. I missed being able to look things up on the spur of the moment. While without phone I felt a little nervous and disconnected but at the same time a little freer and lighter (no phone in purse). It was a pretty heavy phone for its size and the weight of it tended to pull my belt loops out of shape as my tiny purse hooks onto my belt loops with lobster claws - keeps my hands free! My take away from this - backup your phone as soon as possible if you haven't already!

See you next month!
