Hello everyone,

For a better newsletter experience you can also read this email online to get the latest information. I may sometimes add time sensitive information to the newsletter after it is sent out. Feel free to let me know about broken links or links pointing to the wrong page. Read any newsletter in the archives and access the calendar directly using the link in my signature block below or see it in the Workshop Calendar section online. I hope that you can use this newsletter as a jumping off point for your own explorations looking for workshops, teachers and organizations, processes, etc.

  • Do you have any books to donate to the Chicago Books to Women in Prison (please go to the website to see what kinds of books or help they need)? Or you could help them fund the postage for sending these book out, give them some time, donate funds or pick up some CBWP merch
  • Volunteer needed: proofreader - as FOBA prepares participant handbooks, catalogs, and website updates, they will need someone with clear eyes for that final look - this position will work primarily with Christy Turner, their Graphics Chair - they anticipate this reaching the 50-hour mark - at 50 hours, the volunteer earns early conference registration - to apply (or ask questions), please email Jeri Oswalt
  • Save the date - Helen Hiebert's book, Weaving With Paper will be coming soon - Dec 16, 2025 | Helen is also planning a 2nd annual Taos Paper Retreat at the Mabel Dodge Luhan (Taos, NM), which will be held July 20-24, 2026 - express interest here | The Paper Year, an online membership community, will open again to new members Oct 1 - 10, 2025 - to hold your spot
  • The Perseids meteors are already flying and the peak will be Aug 11 - 12, 2025 - find a dark sky place - best viewing after midnight - closest to me would be Joshua Tree National Park and Anza Borrego State Park - both are about 3 hours away as the cars drive.
  • If you wish to take more advanced bookbinding courses check out the workshops being offered by Ah Haa School for the Arts and American Academy of Bookbinding, both in Telluride, CO
  • Update on the future plans for Wells Book Arts Center - more information is available here - page for frequently asked questions about this agreement - this webpage will be updated as information evolves
  • After 25 years, Volcano Arts (Volcano, CA, is east of Sacramento, CA) is riding into off the sunset - doors will be closed 12/31/25, or until stock runs out - shop here
  • Another sad note of passing: Patricia Grass, who ran Green Heron Book Arts in Forest Grove, Oregon (where FOBA was held before moving to Monmouth, OR), passed away on July 10, 2025 - announcement here

Musings and Meanderings

We decided not to go Malaysia and Singapore this summer. All my devices are now conspiring to tempt me with food videos from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam. I know my phone has been listening and it ripples out to the devices I use the most. One of these videos brought back memories from my "little kid time" in Malaysia - it showed up in my YouTube feed about a treat called "ba chang", a cooked meat filling enclosed in uncooked glutinous rice, folded carefully into a soft pyramid-like shape using bamboo leaves, tied to secure the filling and steamed. This was a huge treat as it happened only once a year with my grandmother and aunts prepping and cooking all day. This video made me want to head to Singapore immediately but it will have to wait for when we get there next year. Luckily it is a year round treat now and I was able to figure out where all the stores that sell ba chang are thanks to the clues in the video and looking on Google maps. They have been added to my list of places to visit when we are in Singapore next. Can I add geo-explorer to my resume? Here is more information about the ba chang if you'd like to read about it.

This seems like a good segue to talk about my Peranakan ancestry from what I remember as a kid. I was born into a family with mom, dad and two (2) older twin brothers (yes, they did twin things - stories for another musing, perhaps -see twin confusion in my January 2025 musings). I didn't realize it at the time but I did not have a normal childhood. We wove through the threads of family, blood and adopted (albeit unofficially - hanai ohana as they call it in Hawai'i), with different races (Chinese, Malay and Indian) and religions (Catholic, Islam and Hindu). I grew up not eating beef or pork so that all members of the family could sit down at the same table to eat as we celebrated each others festivals. I hope to re-capture some of that when we head to Malaysia to celebrate Chinese New Year there in February 2026. Having access to all the many cuisines was just part of everyday life and we used different ways, fork & spoon, knife & fork, chopsticks or fingers, to transport all that delicious food to our mouths.

My parents navigated code-switching where they spoke Hokkien (Chinese dialect) so the kids would not understand them but eventually we did, and spoke English, Malay or Cantonese - another Chinese dialect (depending on who they spoke to or where they were) or the pidgin that was a mix of all four languages (sometime a little Tamil got thrown in for good measure) that we spoke around the family. We left all that behind when I was 19 and I learned how to navigate the new adventure that was America. Then school, work and life happened and here I am crafting this ever evolving newsletter and picking up a few more languages along the way. I'd always wished that I had Hawaiian blood but it turns out I have do have some Polynesian blood from the overland Polynesian migration prong (there was also the ocean migration prong more people are familiar with) from my Malay ancestry. Think maybe that is why most Hawaiians think I'm local when we are over there? Living on O'ahu and am having a holoholo (vacation/walkabout) on the the other islands. I am a wee bit pleased about that as I do adore those islands. Here is more information about the Peranakan culture if you liked a slightly deeper dive.

July was a quiet month what with forgotten workshops and workshops that were entirely too early (zooming from the UK!), picking up coffee from a friend of a friend, wearing ear plugs surrounded by 4th of July celebrations (that brought back yet another memory of fireworks and Chinese New Year where my first puppy and I were hiding in my parents armoire to get away from the noise) and unlocking a painfully stiff shoulder. Then the 3rd week cruised in and we found out that the attic needed new insulation after a termite inspection. Not surprising really since the house is 26 years old and nothing has been replaced up there except for the heating unit when we upgraded our air-conditioning system. They don't call it HVAC for nothing.

Then the kitchen flooded and the floor of the dining & living room and lower kitchen cabinets got soaked. The people the insurance company sent over assured us that we wouldn't need to pack anything and that the furniture could even be moved to storage. When did they start offering that? I was feeling terribly stressed about moving and packing everything up! All that was making me hot flash every time I thought about it. An amazing crew of ladies packed up the downstairs and moved everything into the garage. Usually we can park both cars in the garage but now they are both outside in our driveway when there is no work being done or parked in a neighbor's driveway and looking for a precious parking spot when work is being done. They put up plastic along the staircase so that the upstairs would not be affected by any dust and a zipper was installed so we could easily head downstairs if we needed to. These ladies also did the demo (removal) of the floors and cabinets!

I packed away some of the decorative stuff that seemed precious to me before. I now question why I have them as I packed asking myself if I would miss any of it if they were gone. Cleared out half the travel ceramics souvenirs (all items made by my eponym were, of course, kept) and almost all the shells, flotsam & jetsam that I have brought back from our beachcombing travels. I suspect I will be getting rid of my sea glass collection soon. Will also be getting rid of some of the smaller fishing floats as well. There are way too many. There will be more clearing out when the downstairs is ready to be lived in again. Appropriately I saw this Lenora Yerkes thumbnail for her workshop at Pyramid Atlantic that said, "I won't say that this change is hard. Inside I'm screaming!" The level of noise being generated was excruciating despite having our bedroom door closed. Ear plugs will be a must for any future repairs. However I am very grateful for the level of help we received! We are now awaiting the folks to come in to show us the samples they have for the floor and whether or not the lower kitchen cabinets need to be replaced. Not the way I would have wanted to get new kitchen cabinets, maybe, but I do appreciate a soft drawer close which we do not have. Sigh!

I heard a raptor fledgling keening for food in the park as I was waiting for the contractors to show up. There was also a trio of crows eating and I wonder if the fledgling was waiting to be fed?!? I went to the window to see if I could locate it but, alas, I could not see him based on his calls - too many echos from the surrounding buildings. Then that reminded me that I hadn't heard the owl in a while and it made me a skosh sad.

Perhaps after the work is done downstairs we could go to the desert and watch the Perseids fly and stay at the San Francisco airport to watch the planes fly!

See you in August!
