Books & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - July 2024
Hello everyone,
For a better newsletter experience you can also read this email online to get the latest information. Sometimes I may add time sensitive information to the newsletter after the email is sent out. Read any newsletter in the archives
- I had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer Verbit last October at a Hedi Kyle workshop and I wish I could attend her Bells and Whistles workshop at the Center for Book Arts In New York
- Is anyone else going to the Crane Paper Sale on August 16, 2024 in Dalton, MA? I believe it does span the weekend. Please call 413-684-0260 for location, dates and times. Have fun!
- I have been missing a number of meetings lately but I am lucky that they are recorded and preserved for all to check out: (1) San Francisco Center for the Book *From the Bench of ... * previously known as Shelter in Studio (2) San Diego Book Arts (SDBA) has recordings of the meeting demos and tips & tricks and you do need to be a member to view them
- And speaking of San Diego Book Arts one of my bucket list instructors, Paul Jackson, will be teaching 3 workshops each with 5 sessions starting Nov 12, 2024 through Apr 1, 2025 - look for Jackson starting in November on the SDBA website - the dilemma for me is trying to figure out which workshop to take but then I have all his books ... hmmm
- Save the date (time to plan for putting in your proposals and the trip to Newport, OR) for the 2025 Newport Paper and Book Arts Festival (NPBAF): Apr 10 - 12, 2025 - NPBAF Future of the Festival Survey

Musings and Meanderings
Guess what? The "things are breaking" trend is continuing - quick recap - my 2-year old cell phone in March, the very old TV in May, my docking station in June and now Bill's desktop computer this month. I suspect Bill's phone might be next as it is over 4 years old. It wasn't like the desktop stopped working completely - it was over 4 years old and still on Windows 10 (the latest is Windows 11). He could get to most websites except for the financially related ones (which may have been a good thing) and I could not download any additional anti-virus software to run additional tests so my PC doctor (the person I call when I am at a loss) thinks it may have been an extension virus. I tried everything, what I knew and what my PC doctor knew, but nothing worked. We had been discussing getting Bill a new desktop anyway and it was time. I was still shocked at how much prices had gone up even though I had prepared myself for it. It was the same thing when we were on O'ahu in April - I knew it was going to be expensive but the slight intake of surprised breath was still there. It is basically the same computer but with the latest operating system. Ahh! New computer smell! After setting it up so that it looked like his previous desktop everything was good again. Phew!
July has been pretty quiet and warm where air conditioning had to be used but there had been a few days where opening a window would suffice and I was grateful for that. I wonder if the weather patterns are skewing back to normal a little. I recall not having to use the air conditioning when I first moved into this home but the ensuing years had me turning on the air conditioning for more and more days. But then I also recall having a slight panic attack pulling into my garage about six months after buying the place and realizing that I was completely and utterly responsible for this assortment of wood framing, drywall, windows, doors, roof tiles and bits of carpet and vinyl. Luckily it was late and I stopped just short of the driveway and stayed there until I could breathe again without getting dizzy. Then I met Bill the next year and we started our financial budgeting and adventures. 24 years on and we are still having adventures.
Out latest one was our drive up to Tehachapi where we celebrate the life of the dad of a beloved friend. I have known her almost all of my working life and Bill and I adored her father. He was the dad and teacher in the group with his dry wit and humor, always asking about the weather where everyone else was (I think he would have enjoyed the Hawaiian weather station) and the godfather to our little sports car when we had her (definitely a her with lots of get up and go and weirdly other people on the road would get out of her way and then take pictures). We had driven up to a wedding in Santa Barbara, CA, and he was just so taken by the car that he volunteered for that very special role of godfather. He insisted on getting in the car which is a contortion act all on its own and getting out was even more difficult as you had to make sure you you had not eaten too much and was not wearing a skirt. We needed a couple of people to help him out. We always knew if Oscar was there we would all have a great time! We will miss him terribly.
I did make a sympathy card and did the unthinkable. I sliced the latest mandala I had learned, from my brilliant and talented teacher in Brazil, in half (gasp!) and then layered it with a couple of mats to complement the colors of the origami paper. What took the longest and was most difficult was trying to find the words. It was appropriately subdued in the blues and purples with grey (or is it gray?) undertones and, Sharon, Oscar's wife loved it and that was all that mattered. Oh! I also forgot to take a picture of it. I met so many people that had come to honor Oscar and I, being the shy yet social butterfly that I am, thoroughly enjoyed myself. I loved hearing about everyone's experiences and made more friends that we can visit as we go on our adventures. The funny thing is on our last day there I heard that folks seemed to think that I may have been with the Hawaiian Tourism Board - I looked Hawaiian and I definitely gushed about Hawai'i. I do call myself the unofficial ambassador to the Big Island but can gush with enthusiasm about all islands ... well maybe less gushing about O'ahu but that island is still amazing but the crowds, traffic and how much more expensive everything is makes me wonder why I left Los Angeles to come visit here. But we will continue visiting O'ahu to be with our hanai ohana (friends who are like family) and a new friend who has invited me to visit her studio (yes!).
I hope the summer has been treating you well and that you are staying cool! I am still continuing to spring clean - it is amazing how much stuff 2 sets of drawers can hold. I now have a great excuse to hang on to Amazon boxes as I need a place to put aside the items I wish to donate. Don't forget to set aside your gently used items that you are no longer using to donate to your closest craft thrift store (see the list in the Bits and Bobs section).
See you next month!
