Books & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - January 2025
Hello everyone,
For a better newsletter experience you can also read this email online to get the latest information. Sometimes I may add time sensitive information to the newsletter after the email is sent out. Read any newsletter in the archives and access the calendar directly using the link in my signature block below. I hope that you can use this newsletter as a jumping off point for your own explorations looking for workshops, teachers and organizations, honing your processes, etc.
- My thoughts are with the people who have been affected by the fires in the Los Angeles County area and am grateful to all the concerned people who have reached out to check on me. Bill and I are currently safe as we are about 35 miles/56 kilometers away from the 2 major fires but have been going out with masks because of the smoke for a few days after they started
- The website I use to share the workshop calendar with has come up with code that I can use (starting January 2025) to embed a live view of the calendar within this newsletter (if you don't see the embedded calendar below in the About the Calendar section use the link above to view the newsletter on the website)

- I'll keep this up until the April 2025 newsletter: Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 and older will need a state-issued REAL ID-compliant license or identification card, or another acceptable form of ID (such as a passport), to fly within the United States. A fellow member of the North Redwoods Book Arts Guild (NORBAG) alerted me to letter locking (thank you, Margaret B!) - before envelopes were invented people came up with many and various ways of folding and sealing their letters - I found a number of videos to celebrate these various structures: Rennaisance diamond letter; 3 variations of the triangle format: format 1, format 2 and format 3; traditional Japanese letterfold; a simple fold to give your boarding passes some strength; the nonagon; Mary, Queen of Scots last letter; a 20-minute video with more letterlocking techniques and materials available in the United States.

I found this kinda cool paper hand for kids of all ages
I was going back through some very old draft emails where I used to keep articles that I thought I might include in the newsletter and here are some that are still of interest to me and I hope to you as well ...

In 1999, the UK Labour government set out a pledge that half of all young people should go on to higher education but what about those youngsters who do not want to go down the academic route? The BBC has met five who have become apprentices in some of Britain's oldest trades. Read about a leatherworker, globe-maker, clog-maker, wheelwright, and paper maker or bookbinding apprentices
I saw a tutorial using policy envelopes in this old list that reminded me of a workshop I took and found a similar YouTube video by Ginger Ropp - a rather cool structure that uses all parts of the policy envelope including the flap
The Art of Narrative: The article includes a Seattle PBS video featuring this really wonderful short video of Sandra Kroupa to celebrate her upcoming 50th anniversary (at the time) of working for the University of Washington Libraries. She is a true artist's book advocate and very serious about making sure the artist's book collection at UW gets seen by many, many students every quarter. A well-deserved acknowledgement of an important person in the book art community and a behind the scenes glimpse into her world

Musings and Meanderings
Houston was an amazing visit over Christmas 2024. I usually try not to schedule travel during holidays and/or breaks but we did have a grand time getting to know my brother's significant other's kids and grandkids (who were all there from all over the US and I just did a mental check and I still remember their names!). It was especially worth it to see the twin confusion happening. My older brothers are mirror image twins and somehow it never came up that Andre (the one with the significant other) has a twin, Paul. When we got together on Christmas Eve incredulous confusion reigned as people came in and hugged the wrong twin and then the tennis match head back and forth with increasingly furrowed brows as they tried to comprehend that there were 2 of them! I had a marvelous time regaling people with all the twin things they used to and still do. My cheeks and stomach hurt from laughing so much. We forgot to take a video! Darn!
Before and after Christmas there were visits to a number of religious buildings. Beautiful Czech painted churches in the small towns of Schulenburg and La Grange - what a beautiful way to show their reverence and devotion in their place of worship. Thanks to Google translate we were able to read the plaques in Czech. There was also a visit to an intricately sculptured white marble Indian temple. You had to take off your shoes to enter the temple and it was scrupulously clean (not a speck of dirt on the soles of my feet when we were done). Men and women were in separated areas to take off and store their shoes. Every conceivable surface was filled with sculptures and they even carried desserts I used to enjoy growing up in Malaysia.
If you're in Texas on a road trip skip the regular roadside rest stops. Instead go to a Buc-ee's which has the cleanest restrooms I've ever seen other than in Singapore and a plethora of foods (definitely get a BBQ brisket sandwich and some jerky for the road), clothing, toys, tchotkes, souvenirs and everything else in between that you can imagine. It is worth any detour. And the number of gas pumps - more than you could ever imagine - the one we visited had 120 gas pumps and stretched out over the length of a football field. The store itself is almost half the length of that - and this one wasn't even the biggest one. They sure do things bigger in Texas! Oh! Gas prices were half that of California!
So there were continued delays on our outbound flight back to LA (my back still hurts thinking about that flight). A black bird - a common grackle - seemed to have made their home in the airport at Terminal C11 - a distraction as we watched them hunt for anything dropped by stressed and hungry humans. Seemed like a smart move except that they were now dependent on ultra processed human food. We had to hoof it over to Terminal E2 after waiting 2 hours where they finally boarded us another 2 hours later. I did not think that sitting around for 4 hours would cause your entire body to ache despite getting up and stretching often. I do consider myself lucky that they did not cancel the flight as we heard many announced as we waited. Travel tip: if your flight is delayed 3 hours or more you can ask for a travel credit or miles from your airline within 14 days of the delayed trip.
Coming back down to earth from a wonderful trip my espresso machine started to call for descaling after we got back from Houston and I ignored it for a week (I do clean the milk spout every time I use it and rinse out the brew head once a week) until my back stopped aching. Fortified with a flat white, I set up and sat down for a deep cleaning session of the automatic milk system and brew head. It was also a good time to start working on the newsletter for January ...
Also had a chance for an educational adventure to check out the Erik and Martin Demaine: Puzzling with Paper exhibit just before it closed and combined that with a tasty lunch at a Malaysian restaurant with Yolanda A and our spouses. Lots of ooh and ahh echoed in the space as pictures were taken. Had to also check out the gift store, always have to check out the gift store! Here's to more adventures in the future.
BTW - happy to report that I still hear the owl outside my bedroom window and I thought maybe I heard another owl? Stay tuned for more owl news ....
See you in February!
