Musings and Meanderings

A few days after sending out the January 2024 newsletter I was off to Tucson to attend a long awaited Ed Hutchins' workshop, "Chowing Down on Content". I had such a lovely stay with Laura R and seeing Ed again was delightful. His workshop was everything I expected and with lots of surprises built in. We introduced ourselves in one sentence and it was entirely up to us as to whether it was true or not. Not sure how he did it but he was able to pull out content from me from long lost memories one of which from when I was 9. We made a pamphlet stitch book with a self closing cover to hold our prompts, our snippets of stories. Along the way he gave out what I call "mailings" you got to open and read out loud. They were wonderful affirmation that we were enough, that we mattered and that we could write. We also received sealed envelopes cut in half so we could place these pockets in our books to receive our mailings, stickers, stencils, etc. that we also received along the way. After we were done we received a beautiful certificate conferring us with the licence to write. I cannot wait to attend his "Secrets of Paper Animations" to learn his secrets on how he puts his magical moving spins on his books! Oh! Lunch was also provided to allow us to continue to get to know each other and exchange more stories. It was wonderful meeting so many people from Tucson Paperworks. I had the best reaction when someone found out I was that "Jade" and received a punch on the arm in her delight (I hope it was delight) at meeting me. I will treasure that punch. Bonus - thanks to Steve R.'s recommendations a new coffee place was found with cappuccinos thoroughly delicious and enjoyed. Looking forward to getting my coffee from Savaya again.

A couple of weeks later I got to attend a Sol Rébora workshop - Link Structure In Paper. I was thinking about going to CODEX for the day in between workshop but I had to think about recovery from all my adventures. I enjoyed driving down to San Diego again leaving at 6am to get there by 8:15am with even time to pick up a breakfast burrito and coffee halfway through the trip. I remember many a drive down to San Diego to attend workshops and mentioning my newsletter when I first started. This trip the thoughtful barista asked if I wanted to try their latest flavor in my flat white - vanilla and rose. Gosh! It was yummy. This is one of those rare times when I do get up very early in the morning in order to travel for an adventure! What a cool and unusual structure to connect 2 or more books together using their covers. I did not have to go far to pick up a flat white and flavored with yet another new flavor - piloncillo. The baristas, Gerardo, John and Jorge were all most kind to to me and made perfectly balanced flat whites. I'll have to come to more workshops at the Athaneum in San Diego! I also had lunch with my zine group and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the many stories being told. I wish I could have stayed longer but I had another small errand to run and had to get out of the San Diego before the weekend traffic leaving San Diego got really bad.

Something unexpected happened - my husband, Bill, wanted to learn origami!! We had a couple of lessons on basic folds and bases and then set him loose on the Univeristy of YouTube. Unbeknownst to him (well he knows now) I am always going back many, many times to see a part that confused me or did not catch despite looking intently at a PDF. Even though I had been folding casually since I was 6 it can sometimes take a while for me to "get it". I had to gently remind him that I had been folding for a bit now while he has been folding for a month! I also had to confess to him that not only am I a slow folder but am also a terrible one as I am just awful at folding diagonals and any angles other than 45° or 90°. But what I can do is finesse the paper and make the folds more accurate as I can "feel" the paper with my fingertips. I am looking foward to folding the more complicated structures together.

See you next month!
